Jerry Fulton Cantrell Jr. (born March 18, 1966) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known as the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and principal songwriter of Alice in Chains. His playing and songwriting helped define the band's combination of heavy metal weight, grunge atmosphere, and dark melodic writing. The vocal harmonies he developed with Layne Staley became one of the group's most recognizable musical signatures.
Cantrell was born in Tacoma, Washington, and grew up in nearby Spanaway. He began playing guitar as a teenager and developed an early interest in hard rock and heavy metal. In the mid-1980s, he spent time in Texas, where he played in local bands and formed friendships with members of the emerging group Pantera. After returning to Washington, he joined the band Diamond Lie, which included drummer Sean Kinney. The group later evolved into Alice in Chains after Cantrell met bassist Mike Starr and vocalist Layne Staley.
Alice in Chains emerged from Seattle's rock scene at the end of the 1980s. Cantrell's songwriting provided much of the band's musical framework, combining thick, down-tuned guitar riffs with unusual chord progressions and mournful melodies. The band's 1990 debut album, *Facelift*, established them as a major force in the developing grunge movement. Songs such as "Man in the Box" brought them an international audience, while Cantrell's guitar work gave the record a heavier character than many of its Seattle contemporaries.
The band's next releases strengthened Cantrell's reputation as a songwriter. *Dirt* (1992) presented a more severe and emotionally exposed sound, while the acoustic-leaning EPs *Sap* (1992) and *Jar of Flies* (1994) showed that Alice in Chains could achieve the same intensity through restraint and vocal arrangement. The band's self-titled 1995 album continued that approach, balancing sludge-like riffs with spacious, often unsettling compositions. Cantrell frequently shared lead vocals with Staley, creating a tense but highly complementary contrast between their voices.
Cantrell began a solo career with *Boggy Depot* in 1998. The album allowed him to explore a broader range of arrangements while retaining the heavy guitar textures associated with Alice in Chains. His second solo project, *Degradation Trip*, appeared in 2002 and was later expanded as *Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2*. Written during a period of personal and professional upheaval, the album is among his starkest and most direct work.
Following Staley's death in 2002, Cantrell concentrated on solo projects and collaborations before Alice in Chains resumed activity with vocalist and guitarist William DuVall. The reunited band released *Black Gives Way to Blue* in 2009, followed by *The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here* (2013) and *Rainier Fog* (2018). Cantrell remained central to the band's writing and guitar sound while DuVall took a larger role in live and studio vocals.
His later solo albums *Brighten* (2021) and *I Want Blood* (2024) reaffirmed his interest in combining crushing riffs, classic-rock melodicism, and reflective songwriting. Cantrell has also worked with artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Dimebag Darrell, Glenn Hughes, and Duff McKagan, and has contributed to film soundtracks and acted in several movies. Across his career, his importance rests less on virtuoso display than on the distinctive atmosphere, emotional weight, and disciplined economy of his guitar writing.
