Wiki

Biography

Jane Jensen is an American musician, songwriter, producer, actress and performance artist whose work connects alternative rock, industrial music, electronic pop, poetry and independent film. Her career has moved between underground music, theater, cult cinema and multimedia performance, with a style marked by theatrical presentation, dark humor and an interest in comic-book imagery.

Originally from Indianapolis, Jensen moved to Chicago, where she studied music, audio arts and theater at Columbia College. She became involved in avant-garde theater and performance art while also performing with local bands. Her early musical work included recordings under several names before she became associated with Oxygiene 23, a Chicago group formed with Jim Marcus and Van Christie of Die Warzau. The project combined electronic rhythms, atmospheric keyboards and mythology-inspired writing. Oxygiene 23 contributed to the compilation Can You See It Yet? before releasing the album Blue through Fifth Colvmn Records in 1995.

Jensen relocated to New York in the mid-1990s, where she began developing the material that became her solo debut, Comic Book Whore. Produced with Craig Kafton, the album blended industrial programming, guitar-driven alternative rock and direct, conversational lyrics. Released through Flip Records in 1996 and subsequently associated with Interscope, it established Jensen as a distinctive performer with a deliberately stylized persona. The songs "More Than I Can" and "Luv Song" received college and alternative radio exposure, while Jensen toured the United States and Australia with a live band that included Kafton, guitarist John Valentine Carruthers and drummer Duard Kleyn. She also shared stages with acts including L7, Green Day, Gravity Kills and Porno for Pyros.

Jensen's musical work has often been accompanied by visual art. She created caricature and comic-inspired imagery for her releases and performances, reinforcing the connection between her music and the wider world of underground comics, theater and film. Her creative identity later received an unusual acknowledgement when comic-book artist Gene Ha referenced Comic Book Whore in DC Comics' Top 10.

Her second major solo album, Burner, expanded the formula of her debut with fuller arrangements, heavier guitars, hip-hop-influenced drum programming and pop-oriented melodies. Produced with Kafton and Martin Bisi, the album appeared on Jensen's Autozen label around 2000 and later received a Best Alternative Album award from Just Plain Folks. She followed it with My Rockabye, a more acoustic and roots-influenced record that incorporated elements of country, folk and blues. The Privateer, Pt. 1 EP came next, along with the Dollzrock and Trust releases.

Acting has remained an important parallel to Jensen's music. She played Juliet Capulet in Troma Entertainment's cult film Tromeo & Juliet, directed by Lloyd Kaufman and James Gunn, and later appeared in the television series Big Apple. Her songs and performances have also been used in films and soundtracks, including The Crow: Salvation, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV and Slither.

In the 2020s, Jensen continued exploring industrial and post-punk textures. The Changeling release appeared in 2022, followed by the 2024 single Lost Highway, issued in several remixed versions. Her live project, Jane Jensen 911 Live, presents the music through a high-energy band and dramatic visual backdrops, extending the theatrical, darkly glamorous sensibility that has defined her work from the beginning.
