Biography

Ismo Kullervo Alanko (born November 12, 1960, in Kerava, Finland) is a Finnish singer, songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. A central figure in Finnish-language rock, he has built a career by moving freely between punk, new wave, post-punk, alternative rock, electronic music, acoustic songwriting, and orchestral work. His expressive voice, sharply observed lyrics, and willingness to change direction have made him one of Finland's most distinctive and enduring popular musicians.

Alanko first became widely known as the frontman and principal songwriter of Hassisen Kone. Formed in Joensuu in 1979, the band won the new wave category of Finland's 1980 Rock SM competition and quickly became one of the country's leading young rock acts. Its debut album, Taaalta tullaan Venaja, appeared in 1980, followed by Rumat savelet in 1981 and Harsoinen teras in 1982. Hassisen Kone combined the direct energy of punk with more elaborate arrangements and lyrics that could be sarcastic, humorous, political, and reflective within the same song. Although the band had reached the top of the Finnish rock scene, it disbanded in 1982 rather than remain tied to its established formula.

Alanko then founded Sielun Veljet with guitarist Jukka Orma. The group became known for its intense, theatrical performances and a raw, rhythm-driven sound that contrasted with the more melodic approach of Hassisen Kone. Its early records, including Sielun Veljet, Hei soturit, and Kuka teki huorin, established the band as one of the most adventurous acts in 1980s Finland. Under the name L'Amourder, the musicians also pursued English-language material, releasing the album Shit-Hot and touring outside Finland. Later releases such as Suomi-Finland and Softwood Music Under Slow Pillars demonstrated that the band was not interested in repeating its own successes. Sielun Veljet ended its original run in 1991.

Alanko's solo career began with Kun Suomi putos puusta in 1990. The album marked a clear departure from the forceful sound of Sielun Veljet, using environmental recordings, unusual percussion, and a more expansive approach to songwriting. Jaatyneita lauluja followed in 1993 and moved in a different direction again, incorporating electronic textures and synthesized sounds. Taiteilijaelamaa and Irti continued his exploration of personal, social, and existential themes while confirming his ability to reshape his musical identity from one project to the next.

From 1998 onward, much of Alanko's work was released under the name Ismo Alanko Saato. The ensemble had a changing membership and served as a flexible framework for albums such as Pulu, Sisainen solarium, Hallanvaara, Minä ja pojat, and Ruuhkainen taivas. In the late 2000s he also worked with the group Ismo Alanko Teholla, releasing Blanco Spirituals and Onnellisuus. His later solo albums include Maailmanlopun sushibaari, Ismo Kullervo Alanko, Minä halusin olla niin kuin Beethoven, and Me olemme ihme.

Alongside recording and touring, Alanko has written music for theater, film, and television and has worked in collaborative and orchestral settings. His lyrics often examine Finnish identity, social contradictions, desire, mortality, and the tension between everyday language and poetic imagery. Released on February 13, 2026, Kevyt ja kohtuuton continued his long-standing practice of combining direct rock performance with restless, questioning songwriting. Alanko's career is defined less by a single signature style than by an unusual capacity for renewal without losing his recognizable artistic voice.
