Hooverphonic is a Belgian electronic band formed in Sint-Niklaas in 1995. Originally known as Hoover, the group was built around bassist, programmer, songwriter and producer Alex Callier, guitarist Raymond Geerts, keyboardist Frank Duchene and vocalist Esther Lybeert. The name was changed to Hooverphonic soon after the band's formation, partly to avoid confusion with other acts and possible trademark complications.
Hooverphonic first attracted international attention with its debut album, A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular, released in 1996. Recorded with singer Liesje Sadonius, the album established the group's early trip hop identity through slow breakbeats, atmospheric programming, shadowy textures and cinematic arrangements. Its best-known track, "2Wicky," became especially prominent after appearing on the soundtrack to Bernardo Bertolucci's film Stealing Beauty. The song later featured in other film and television productions, helping Hooverphonic reach audiences beyond Belgium.
Sadonius left the band after the debut, and Geike Arnaert became Hooverphonic's principal vocalist in 1997. Her arrival began the most commercially successful period in the group's history. The 1998 album Blue Wonder Power Milk retained the band's electronic foundation but added richer orchestration, more conventional song structures and a stronger pop sensibility. With its sophisticated production and distinctive vocal performances, the album showed that Hooverphonic was moving beyond the trip hop label.
The band's breakthrough in Belgium came with The Magnificent Tree in 2000. The album combined electronic rhythms with strings, guitar and carefully shaped pop melodies. It produced several of Hooverphonic's best-known songs, including "Mad About You," "Vinegar & Salt" and the title track. "Mad About You" became one of the band's signature recordings and remains closely associated with Arnaert's voice. Hooverphonic Presents Jackie Cane followed in 2002. Built around a fictional character and influenced by theatrical pop and classic show music, it marked another deliberate stylistic change and became one of the group's most successful albums in Belgium.
Hooverphonic continued to reshape its sound throughout the 2000s. The paired albums No More Sweet Music and More Sweet Music presented alternate versions of the same compositions, while The President of the LSD Golf Club moved toward a more psychedelic and expansive approach. In 2008, Arnaert left the band to pursue solo work. She was followed by Noemie Wolfs, who sang on releases including The Night Before, Reflection and the orchestral projects Hooverphonic with Orchestra and Hooverphonic with Orchestra Live. Wolfs departed in 2015, and Luka Cruysberghs became the group's vocalist for the 2018 album Looking for Stars.
Hooverphonic represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021 with "The Wrong Place." The group had originally been selected for the cancelled 2020 contest with "Release Me." Arnaert returned to the band in 2020, reuniting the lineup long associated with Hooverphonic's classic period for the Eurovision appearance and subsequent work, including Hidden Stories in 2021 and Fake Is the New Dope in 2024.
The band has continued to balance electronic production with orchestral pop, alternative rock and cinematic songwriting. Its 2025 release The Magnificent Tree - Live With Strings revisited material from the group's celebrated 2000 album in a concert setting. During the 2026 anniversary period, Hooverphonic entered another transition: Arnaert and Geerts announced their departures, while Wolfs returned for touring with Callier. Across changing vocalists and evolving arrangements, Callier's production and Geerts' guitar work have remained central to the band's identity.
