Christopher Tucker (born August 31, 1971) is an American actor and stand-up comedian known for his rapid-fire delivery, high-energy physical performance, and distinctive voice. He became widely recognized during the 1990s and established his international profile through the Rush Hour film series, in which he played fast-talking Los Angeles detective James Carter opposite Jackie Chan.

Tucker grew up in Decatur, Georgia, and moved to Los Angeles after high school to pursue comedy. He gained early exposure through the HBO series Def Comedy Jam, where his animated stage presence and clean, expressive routines made him a notable performer during the program's influential 1990s run. His comedy drew on observational material, pop culture, and impressions, while his timing and vocal range helped distinguish him from many of his contemporaries.

His first feature-film appearance came in House Party 3 (1994). Tucker's breakthrough followed with Friday (1995), the cult comedy written by and starring Ice Cube. As the talkative marijuana dealer Smokey, Tucker created one of the most memorable comic characters of the decade. The role showcased a screen persona that was more unruly and profane than his stand-up work, while also demonstrating his ability to control a scene through rhythm, reaction, and verbal momentum. He also appeared in the 1995 films Panther and Dead Presidents.

Tucker expanded his range in 1997. He played flamboyant radio host Ruby Rhod in Luc Besson's science-fiction adventure The Fifth Element, starred with Charlie Sheen in the action comedy Money Talks, and appeared as Beaumont Livingston in Quentin Tarantino's crime film Jackie Brown. These roles established him as a versatile supporting and leading performer, capable of moving between broad comedy, genre spectacle, and more restrained dramatic material.

The role that defined Tucker's mainstream career arrived in Rush Hour (1998). As Detective Carter, he provided the outspoken American counterpart to Chan's quieter Hong Kong police officer. The film's combination of martial-arts action and verbal comedy was a major commercial success, and Tucker returned for Rush Hour 2 (2001) and Rush Hour 3 (2007). The trilogy made him an international star and, during the production of the third installment, one of Hollywood's highest-paid performers.

Tucker's film appearances became less frequent after Rush Hour 3. He chose not to reprise Smokey in the later Friday sequels and increasingly concentrated on stand-up performance and selected film projects. He returned to prominent supporting roles in David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook (2012), Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016), and Ben Affleck's Air (2023), in which he portrayed Nike executive Howard White.

Beyond film, Tucker has appeared in music videos including Tupac Shakur's California Love, Michael Jackson's You Rock My World, and Mariah Carey's Shake It Off. He has also produced comedy projects, including the Netflix special Chris Tucker Live (2015), and continues to be associated with touring stand-up comedy and charitable work through the Chris Tucker Foundation. His career is defined by the unusual combination of a relatively selective filmography, a major action-comedy franchise, and a comic style rooted in the immediacy of live performance.
