My Chemical Romance is an American rock band formed in Newark, New Jersey, in 2001. Led by vocalist Gerard Way, the group became one of the defining acts of the 2000s alternative rock and emo era, combining punk urgency, heavy guitar work, theatrical presentation, and emotionally direct songwriting. The classic lineup consisted of Gerard Way, guitarist Ray Toro, bassist Mikey Way, and guitarist Frank Iero, with Matt Pelissier and later Bob Bryar serving as drummers during the band's principal recording period.
The band emerged from the New Jersey underground at a time when post-hardcore, punk, and emo were gaining a wider audience. Their debut album, *I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love*, was released by Eyeball Records in 2002. Produced by Thursday singer Geoff Rickly, the record presented a raw and dark version of the group, with songs built around horror imagery, desperation, guilt, and romantic tragedy. It established the band's core aesthetic while giving them a foothold in the independent music scene.
After signing with Reprise Records, My Chemical Romance released *Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge* in 2004. The album brought a sharper production style and a stronger balance between punk aggression and pop melody. Singles such as "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)," "Helena," and "The Ghost of You" helped move the band from clubs to large venues and music television. The record's success also marked a change in the group's personnel: original drummer Matt Pelissier was replaced by Bob Bryar.
The band's most ambitious work arrived with *The Black Parade* in 2006. Framed as a rock opera about death, memory, illness, and the stories people leave behind, the album expanded My Chemical Romance's sound with piano, orchestration, classic-rock influences, and elaborate visual symbolism. The single "Welcome to the Black Parade" became the band's signature song, while "Famous Last Words," "Teenagers," and "Cancer" demonstrated the breadth of the project. The accompanying stage show treated the band as both a rock act and a theatrical production, helping make *The Black Parade* a landmark album of its period.
Seeking a different direction, the group followed it with *Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys* in 2010. Its colorful comic-book setting and science-fiction imagery replaced the previous album's funeral pageantry with a louder, more kinetic style influenced by punk, glam rock, and power pop. Bob Bryar departed before the album's release. The band later issued *Conventional Weapons*, a series of singles drawn from earlier recording sessions, before announcing its breakup on March 22, 2013. The compilation *May Death Never Stop You* followed in 2014 and included "Fake Your Death," the final completed song from the band's first era.
My Chemical Romance reunited in 2019 for a concert in Los Angeles and gradually returned to live performance after pandemic delays. In 2022, they released "The Foundations of Decay," their first new song in eight years. The reunion period developed into major concert appearances and the *Long Live: The Black Parade* shows, followed by the announced *The Black Parade 2026* stadium tour celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the album. Across its career, My Chemical Romance has remained known for turning personal and social anxieties into large-scale rock drama without losing the directness of a punk band.
