Silbermond is a German pop-rock band from Bautzen, Saxony. The group consists of vocalist Stefanie Kloess, guitarist and pianist Thomas Stolle, bassist Johannes Stolle, and drummer Andreas Nowak. Known for emotionally direct songwriting, strong melodic hooks, and a balance of rock instrumentation with polished pop production, Silbermond became one of the most successful German-language bands of the 2000s and remained a major live act in the following decades.
The four musicians first met in 1998 through the youth music project Ten Sing. In 2000, they began performing together under the name JAST, formed from the initials of the members' first names. After briefly using the name Exakt, the group adopted Silbermond in 2002 and increasingly focused on songs written in German. The new name also marked a clearer musical identity, combining accessible pop melodies with the energy of a guitar band.
Silbermond broke through in 2004. Their debut album, Verschwende Deine Zeit, followed early exposure as the opening act for singer Jeanette Biedermann and quickly established the band nationally. The singles "Durch die Nacht" and, especially, "Symphonie" introduced the group to a broad audience. The album became a major commercial success, while "Symphonie" developed into one of the band's signature songs. Silbermond also gained a reputation as a powerful concert band, a reputation strengthened by their appearance at the Berlin stage of the international Live 8 benefit concert in 2005.
The second album, Laut gedacht (2006), confirmed that the debut had not been a temporary success. It reached the top of the German and Austrian album charts and produced "Das Beste," the band's first number-one single. The song's simple, intimate presentation became particularly representative of Silbermond's ability to turn personal themes into broadly relatable pop music. At the same time, the album retained the group's rock-oriented foundation.
With Nichts passiert (2009), Silbermond extended its reach across the German-speaking market. The album topped the charts in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and included "Irgendwas bleibt," another number-one single, as well as "Krieger des Lichts." In 2009, the band received the MTV Europe Music Award for Best German Act and continued to combine mainstream success with a distinct German-language identity.
The albums Himmel auf (2012), Leichtes Gepaeck (2015), and Schritte (2019) showed a gradual broadening of the band's sound. While the early records often emphasized expansive rock arrangements and dramatic ballads, later releases made room for more restrained production and reflective themes. Schritte reached number one in Germany and addressed personal development as well as social and political concerns.
Silbermond returned with Auf Auf in 2023, followed by the live release Auf Auf - Live im Theater des Westens in 2024. The band has also issued concert recordings, a career compilation, and numerous singles and collaborations. By the mid-2020s, Silbermond remained an established German pop-rock institution, with its long-standing lineup intact and its catalog centered on songs about relationships, resilience, belonging, and the challenges of contemporary life.
