David Morales (born August 21, 1961) is an American DJ, record producer, songwriter, and remixer whose work helped define the polished, expansive sound of New York house music. A Brooklyn native, Morales emerged from the city's club culture during the 1980s, when DJs were becoming increasingly important as selectors, editors, and producers rather than simply performers between live acts.
Morales began DJing as a teenager and developed his craft in the New York club circuit. He became associated with venues including the Ozone Layer, Paradise Garage, Red Zone, Club Zanzibar, Tunnel, and Club USA. His work at the Ozone Layer, where he held a residency during the early 1980s, helped establish him as one of the city's most promising young DJs. He also became involved with Judy Weinstein's For The Record record pool, a key network connecting New York DJs with new dance releases.
In 1987, Morales and Weinstein formed Def Mix Productions with Chicago house pioneer Frankie Knuckles. The company initially served as a professional identity for their remix work but soon developed into one of the most influential production teams in club music. Def Mix brought together DJs, musicians, programmers, and engineers to rebuild songs rather than simply extend them for the dance floor. Morales and Knuckles often created new instrumental beds, added live or programmed elements, and reshaped arrangements so that pop and R&B recordings could function as fully developed house tracks.
Morales' remixing career expanded rapidly during the late 1980s and 1990s. He worked with artists including Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Madonna, U2, Eric Clapton, Seal, Donna Summer, Tina Turner, Pet Shop Boys, Jamiroquai, and CeCe Peniston. Among his best-known remixes are reworkings of Carey's "Dreamlover," U2's "Lemon," Jackson's "Throb," Alison Limerick's "Where Love Lives," Jamiroquai's "Space Cowboy," Jaydee's "Plastic Dreams," Robert Owens' "I'll Be Your Friend," and Peniston's "Finally." His approach helped move house music beyond specialist clubs and into mainstream pop without removing its rhythmic and communal character.
Morales began releasing music under his own name in the early 1990s. His first full-length project, *The Program*, was credited to David Morales & The Bad Yard Club and appeared in 1993. He later issued *2 Worlds Collide* in 2005 and *Changes* in 2011. In 1998, using the name David Morales Presents The Face, he released "Needin' U," a major house record built around a memorable vocal hook and energetic piano-driven production. The track became one of the defining club anthems of his career.
Morales received three Grammy nominations and won the Grammy for Remixer of the Year, Non-Classical, at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards. He continued to tour internationally, perform at major clubs and festivals, and contribute to radio and DJ mix programs. In 2018, he launched DIRIDIM Records, a label focused on house and electronic music. His later work includes the album *Life Is a Song*, released in 2022. Through his recordings, remixes, label work, and decades behind the decks, Morales remains one of the central figures in the development and global spread of modern house music.
