Toni-Ville Henrik Virtanen (born July 17, 1975), known professionally as Darude, is a Finnish DJ, record producer, and composer associated with trance, house, and electronic dance music. He was born in Eura, Finland, and later became based in Turku. Virtanen began experimenting with music in the mid-1990s while studying at Turku Polytechnic, using computer tracker software to build electronic compositions. His early work developed through home production, club culture, and online circulation before attracting the attention of Finnish producer Jaakko Salovaara, better known as JS16.
The partnership with JS16 became the defining launch point of Darude's career. His first major release, "Sandstorm," appeared in Finland in 1999 and quickly grew from a local club track into an international dance hit. Built around a sharp, instantly recognizable synthesizer hook, a driving rhythm, and a tightly arranged instrumental structure, the track demonstrated how a relatively simple electronic idea could achieve mass appeal without relying on vocals. It reached the top five in numerous countries, including number three on the UK Singles Chart, and became one of the signature dance records of the early 2000s.
"Sandstorm" was also notable for its visual identity. The accompanying music video presented Darude in a stylized chase narrative, helping establish the theatrical, high-energy image associated with the single. Over time, the track gained a second life through sports broadcasts, video games, online videos, and meme culture. Its continued recognition has made it both Darude's defining work and one of the most widely identifiable instrumental dance tracks of its era.
Darude's debut album, Before the Storm, followed in 2000. The record expanded on the sound of "Sandstorm" with a mixture of uplifting trance, club-focused instrumentals, and melodic dance production. It topped the Finnish album chart, performed strongly internationally, and reportedly sold around 800,000 copies worldwide. The album also produced "Feel the Beat," another major success that reached number five in the United Kingdom and number one in Finland. Darude received three Finnish Emma Awards in recognition of the album and its impact.
He continued his album career with Rush in 2003, Label This! in 2007, and Moments in 2015. These releases showed a broader approach to dance music, combining trance foundations with house influences, vocal collaborations, and more contemporary production. He also remained active as a remixer and touring DJ, performing internationally rather than relying solely on the legacy of his breakthrough single.
In 2019, Darude represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest with singer Sebastian Rejman. Their entry, "Look Away," was selected through Finland's national competition and addressed global social and environmental concerns. The song did not qualify from the first semifinal, but the appearance introduced Darude to a different television audience and underscored his status as one of Finland's best-known international music exports.
Darude returned with the album Together in 2023. The release continued his interest in collaborative electronic music while retaining the melodic, energetic qualities that had defined his most successful work. Although "Sandstorm" remains overwhelmingly his best-known recording, Darude's longer career reflects sustained activity as a producer, performer, remixer, and ambassador for Finnish electronic music.
