Chris Isaak (born June 26, 1956, in Stockton, California) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, actor, and television host. He is known for combining the atmosphere of early rock and roll with rockabilly, country, rhythm and blues, and the dramatic romanticism of vintage pop. His music is marked by echoing guitar, restrained arrangements, and a wide, expressive vocal range that can move from a low croon to a distinctive falsetto.
Isaak began performing professionally in the late 1970s and formed the band Silvertone with guitarist James Calvin Wilsey, bassist Rowland Salley, and drummer Kenney Dale Johnson. The group became his long-term backing band and helped establish the lean, reverb-heavy sound that remained central to his work. Isaak's debut album, Silvertone, appeared on Warner Bros. Records in 1985. Although it received favorable critical attention, it was not a major commercial success. Songs from the album later gained additional exposure through David Lynch's film Blue Velvet.
His self-titled second album, Chris Isaak, followed in 1987 and brought him greater attention through songs such as "Blue Hotel" and "You Owe Me Some Kind of Love." The breakthrough came with Heart Shaped World in 1989. The album initially attracted only modest sales, but "Wicked Game" eventually became an international hit after its use in Lynch's Wild at Heart. The song's sensual, melancholy mood was reinforced by widely seen black-and-white videos, including one directed by Herb Ritts featuring model Helena Christensen. "Wicked Game" became Isaak's signature recording and transformed him from a respected cult artist into a mainstream star.
Isaak continued to explore variations on his established style with San Francisco Days (1993), Forever Blue (1995), The Baja Sessions (1996), and Speak of the Devil (1998). Forever Blue produced the single "Somebody's Crying" and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. In 1995, Isaak also scored a notable success with "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing," a forceful rockabilly song later used in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. His albums generally favored mood, tone, and performance over radical stylistic change, giving his catalog a coherent identity.
Isaak has also maintained a parallel career in film and television. He appeared in films including Married to the Mob, Wild at Heart, The Silence of the Lambs, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, That Thing You Do!, and A Dirty Shame. He starred as a fictionalized version of himself in the Showtime series The Chris Isaak Show, which ran from 2001 to 2004. He later hosted The Chris Isaak Hour, a music interview and performance program, and served as a judge on The X Factor Australia.
His later recordings include Always Got Tonight (2002), Mr. Lucky (2009), Beyond the Sun (2011), and First Comes the Night (2015). Beyond the Sun paid tribute to the artists and recordings associated with Sun Records, while Everybody Knows It's Christmas (2022) applied his vintage sound to seasonal material. Across several decades, Isaak has remained a distinctive performer whose carefully preserved retro style, cinematic presentation, and emotionally direct songs have kept him closely associated with the romantic side of American rock and roll.
