Chayanne is the stage name of Elmer Figueroa Arce (born June 28, 1968), a Puerto Rican singer, dancer, and actor whose career has extended across Latin pop, romantic ballads, television, film, and international touring. Known for combining polished choreography with an approachable vocal style, he became one of the most recognizable male performers in Spanish-language popular music from the late 1980s onward.
He began performing as a child and joined the Puerto Rican boy band Los Chicos at about ten years old. The group emerged during the early 1980s, when youth-oriented acts such as Menudo dominated the Latin American market. Los Chicos recorded several albums, toured internationally, and appeared in the musical film *Conexion Caribe*. The experience gave Chayanne an early education in recording, stage performance, and the demands of a professional entertainment career.
After Los Chicos disbanded, Chayanne began his solo career with *Es Mi Nombre* in 1984, followed by *Sangre Latina* in 1986. His move to Sony Music helped establish a more ambitious pop identity. The self-titled album *Chayanne* from 1987 introduced songs such as "Fiesta en America" and "Peligro de Amor," while the second self-titled album, released in 1988, expanded his audience with hits including "Tu Pirata Soy Yo," "Este Ritmo Se Baila Asi," and "Fuiste un Trozo de Hielo en la Escarcha." The latter became his first number-one hit on the U.S. Latin chart, and the album earned a Grammy nomination.
During the 1990s, Chayanne developed the formula that would define much of his career: dramatic ballads, dance-oriented pop, and a highly visual performance style. *Tiempo de Vals* (1990) supplied a signature romantic song, while *Provocame* (1992) emphasized a more energetic and sensual presentation. He followed it with *Influencias* (1994), a tribute to artists who shaped his musical outlook, and *Volver a Nacer* (1996), which produced further popular singles.
His commercial peak continued with *Atado a Tu Amor* (1998), whose songs included "Dejaria Todo" and "Salome." The albums *Simplemente* (2000), *Sincero* (2003), and *Cautivo* (2005) maintained his place in the Latin pop mainstream. Both *Simplemente* and *Sincero* received Grammy nominations for Best Latin Pop Album, as did *Atado a Tu Amor*. His later releases included *Mi Tiempo* (2007), *No Hay Imposibles* (2010), and *En Todo Estare* (2014). The latter returned him to the top of the Latin albums chart and included "Humanos a Marte" and "Madre Tierra (Oye)."
Chayanne has also maintained a parallel acting career. He appeared in Puerto Rican television productions before taking roles in Latin American telenovelas such as *Pobre Juventud*, *Volver a Empezar*, and *Provocame*. His film work includes the Puerto Rican production *Linda Sara* and the English-language musical drama *Dance with Me* (1998), in which he co-starred with Vanessa L. Williams. He later played the title role in the television series *Gabriel*, a supernatural drama released in 2008.
After an extended period without a new studio album, Chayanne returned with *Bailemos Otra Vez* in 2023. The record reaffirmed his preference for romantic pop while incorporating contemporary Latin production. Across more than four decades, his longevity has rested on a consistent combination of melodic songs, disciplined stagecraft, and broad appeal across Latin America, Spain, and Spanish-speaking audiences in the United States.
