Cerrone is the stage name of Marc Cerrone (born May 24, 1952, in Vitry-sur-Seine, France), a drummer, composer, producer, arranger, DJ and concert creator whose work helped define European disco. His records combine forceful four-on-the-floor rhythms with orchestral strings, synthesizers, funk, sensual vocals and theatrical presentation. Although he became famous during the disco era, Cerrone continued recording and performing across successive generations of dance music, from post-disco and electronic pop to house and modern French touch.
Cerrone began playing drums at the age of 12. As a teenager, he developed an interest in soul, psychedelic rock and rhythm-driven music, citing artists such as Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix and Santana among his influences. Before establishing himself as a recording artist, he worked in the music business as an A&R scout for Club Med. In the early 1970s, he formed Kongas, a group that mixed hard rock, funk and African-inspired percussion. Kongas recorded for Barclay Records, releasing the album Kongas, also known as Afro Rock, in 1974. The group's "Anikana-O" later became particularly associated with the extended dance mixes of the period.
Cerrone left Kongas to pursue his own musical direction and established Malligator, an independent label and production company. His first major solo success was Love in C Minor, released in 1976. Co-written with Alec R. Costandinos, the record was an extended, orchestral disco suite with an unusually expansive structure for its time. It became an international club and chart success and introduced the Cerrone formula: a prominent rhythm section, lavish arrangements, erotic imagery and a strong sense of spectacle.
Cerrone's Paradise followed in 1977, but his defining statement arrived later that year with Supernature, also known as Cerrone 3. The title track placed sequencers and electronic textures alongside strings and a powerful disco groove, while its science-fiction theme imagined the consequences of technological interference with nature. The song became one of Cerrone's signature recordings and a lasting club classic. The album's success established him as one of the most prominent European disco artists and brought major recognition in the United States, where he received several honors at the 1978 Billboard Disco Forum.
He continued the numbered-album series with Cerrone IV: The Golden Touch in 1978 and released a succession of ambitious projects during the following decade, including Angelina, Panic, You Are the One, Back Track and Your Love Survived. His work also expanded beyond dance albums. He produced recordings for fellow musicians, composed soundtracks for the Brigade Mondaine films and developed The Collector, first issued as an album in 1985 and later adapted into a rock opera. Another stage project, Dreamtime, reached Broadway in 1992.
During the 1990s, Cerrone explored house, dance-pop and contemporary electronic production on albums such as Dream, X-Xex and Human Nature. His influence became increasingly visible as younger producers sampled, remixed and reinterpreted his catalog. The 2001 compilation Cerrone by Bob Sinclar helped connect his classic material with the French house revival, while later albums including Hysteria, Celebrate!, Red Lips and DNA balanced his established sound with newer production techniques.
Cerrone marked five decades in music with Cerrone by Cerrone in 2022, a continuously mixed collection of reworked songs and guest remixes. In 2025, he released Disco Symphony, presenting 21 career highlights with the Symphony Orchestra of Cannes. The project reflects the central quality of his music: disco conceived not simply as a pop style, but as large-scale, cinematic dance music.
