Glen Travis Campbell (April 22, 1936 - August 8, 2017) was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, actor, and television host whose career connected country music with mainstream pop. Known for his clear tenor voice, polished guitar playing, and accessible interpretations of sophisticated songs, Campbell became one of the most successful crossover artists of the 1960s and 1970s.
Born in Billstown, Arkansas, Campbell learned guitar as a child and performed in local bands during his teenage years. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1950s, where he worked as a studio musician and became part of the group of elite session players later known as the Wrecking Crew. His guitar and vocal contributions appeared on recordings by artists including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, the Mamas & the Papas, Bobby Darin, and many others. Campbell also toured with the Beach Boys in 1964, temporarily taking Brian Wilson's place on the road.
Although he released records as a solo artist from the early 1960s, Campbell's initial recordings attracted limited attention. His breakthrough came with "Gentle on My Mind," written by John Hartford. Campbell's recording, released in 1967, established a warmer and more contemporary sound than much of the country music of the period. He followed it with Jimmy Webb compositions including "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman," and "Galveston." These songs combined country instrumentation with orchestral arrangements and introspective lyrics, helping Campbell reach audiences well beyond the traditional country market.
Campbell's most recognizable commercial successes included "Rhinestone Cowboy," "Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.)," and "Southern Nights." Between 1967 and 1980, he placed numerous songs on both the country and pop charts. His albums from this period, including {{em|Gentle on My Mind}}, {{em|By the Time I Get to Phoenix}}, {{em|Wichita Lineman}}, and {{em|Galveston}}, established him as a leading interpreter of modern American songwriting. His first Grammy victories came in 1967, when "Gentle on My Mind" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" won awards in both country and pop categories. The album {{em|By the Time I Get to Phoenix}} later won the Grammy for Album of the Year.
Campbell expanded his public profile through television. He hosted {{em|The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour}} on CBS from 1968 to 1972, presenting music and comedy while sharing the screen with leading performers of the era. He also acted in films, most notably playing La Boeuf opposite John Wayne and Kim Darby in {{em|True Grit}} (1969). His performance and recording for the film further demonstrated his ability to work across entertainment formats.
His chart success diminished during the 1980s, although he continued recording and touring and returned to the country Top Ten with songs such as "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle," recorded with Steve Wariner. Campbell later explored gospel music and continued releasing albums into the 2000s. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
In 2011, Campbell announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. His farewell tour and the documentary {{em|Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me}} presented his final years as a working musician. The film's closing song, "I'm Not Gonna Miss You," earned Campbell a final Grammy Award and an Academy Award nomination. His final studio album, {{em|Adios}}, was released in 2017, shortly before his death. His recordings remain notable for their blend of country feeling, pop craftsmanship, and the distinctive sound of his guitar and voice.
