BT is the stage name of Brian Wayne Transeau (born October 4, 1971), an American electronic musician, composer, producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and audio technologist. His work connects progressive trance, house, breakbeat, ambient music, glitch, pop, and contemporary orchestral composition. Although he is often described as a DJ, Transeau is more accurately recognized as a composer and studio innovator whose music has moved between clubs, albums, films, television, video games, and experimental multimedia projects.
Born in Rockville, Maryland, Transeau began studying classical piano as a child and learned composition and music theory at the Washington Conservatory of Music. He later attended Berklee College of Music, where he expanded his interests into jazz, synthesis, computer programming, and electronic production. His early musical influences included classical composers as well as Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, New Order, Afrika Bambaataa, and other artists associated with electronic and post-disco music.
After leaving Berklee, Transeau moved to Los Angeles and initially sought work as a singer-songwriter. He instead found an audience for the harmonically rich electronic music he was developing. His early releases were connected with the Washington, D.C., dance scene and the Deep Dish circle. Under the name BT, he began attracting attention in the United Kingdom during the early 1990s, where tracks such as "A Moment of Truth" and "Relativity" helped establish his reputation in the developing progressive-trance field.
BT's debut album, Ima (1995), introduced his expansive approach to dance music. The album's best-known track, "Blue Skies," featured Tori Amos and became a major dance-club success in the United States. Its combination of long-form arrangements, layered melodies, and detailed electronic programming distinguished BT from more conventional club producers. He followed it with ESCM (1997), which broadened his palette with rock, drum and bass, and more prominent vocal elements. Tracks such as "Flaming June," "Remember," and "Love, Peace and Grease" became important entries in his catalog.
With Movement in Still Life (1999) and Emotional Technology (2003), BT moved further toward a hybrid of electronic music, pop songwriting, hip-hop, and alternative rock. The latter included "Somnambulist (Simply Being Loved)," a highly edited vocal production that became one of his signature works. He has also collaborated with or produced for artists including Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Sting, Madonna, Seal, Tori Amos, Britney Spears, 'NSYNC, and Sarah McLachlan.
Transeau's interest in sound design and digital processing became central to his identity. He developed and patented techniques associated with "stutter editing," in which brief fragments of audio are repeated and processed into rhythmic textures. His production work eventually led to software projects including Stutter Edit and BreakTweaker, extending his creative practice into music technology.
BT has also composed for film, television, and games. His screen work includes Go, The Fast and the Furious, Monster, Stealth, and Catch and Release, while his music has appeared in programs and games including the Need for Speed series. This Binary Universe (2006) marked a decisive turn toward ambient, orchestral, and glitch-based composition, presenting its music as an audiovisual experience. Later albums, including These Hopeful Machines (2010), A Song Across Wires (2013), The Lost Art of Longing (2020), Metaversal (2021), and The Secret Language of Trees (2023), continued to balance melodic trance with experimentation. These Hopeful Machines earned BT a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album, confirming his status as one of electronic music's most technically ambitious and stylistically wide-ranging artists.
