Biography

Paul Bruce Dickinson (born August 7, 1958) is an English singer, songwriter, author, pilot, and broadcaster, best known as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. Recognized for his powerful, wide-ranging voice and theatrical stage presence, he has helped define the band's sound and visual identity since joining in 1981. His career has also included a substantial solo catalog and a parallel life in aviation.

Dickinson began performing in small British rock bands during the 1970s. In 1979, he joined Samson, a new wave of British heavy metal group led by guitarist Paul Samson. Performing under the stage name "Bruce Bruce", he appeared on the albums Head On (1980) and Shock Tactics (1981). Samson gave Dickinson valuable experience as a frontman, but his career changed decisively when he replaced Paul Di'Anno in Iron Maiden.

His first Iron Maiden album was The Number of the Beast (1982), a landmark release that established the group as one of the leading bands of the British heavy metal movement. Dickinson's dramatic delivery became central to songs such as "Children of the Damned", "Hallowed Be Thy Name", and "Run to the Hills". He continued through a remarkably successful sequence of albums, including Piece of Mind (1983), Powerslave (1984), Somewhere in Time (1986), Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988), and Fear of the Dark (1992). His contributions as a songwriter grew over time, with credits including "Revelations", "Flight of Icarus", "Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter", and several later Maiden compositions.

Dickinson launched his solo career with Tattooed Millionaire in 1990. The album, written partly with Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers, favored a direct hard-rock approach rather than reproducing Maiden's elaborate style. After leaving Iron Maiden in 1993, he developed the solo project further through Balls to Picasso (1994), Skunkworks (1996), Accident of Birth (1997), The Chemical Wedding (1998), and Tyranny of Souls (2005). Working closely with guitarist and producer Roy Z, Dickinson returned to a heavier, more atmospheric sound on Accident of Birth and The Chemical Wedding, the latter drawing on alchemical imagery and the writings of William Blake.

He rejoined Iron Maiden in 1999, beginning a second period that produced albums such as Brave New World, Dance of Death, A Matter of Life and Death, The Final Frontier, The Book of Souls, and Senjutsu. Outside the studio, he became known for exceptional stamina as a touring singer and for his energetic, often highly physical performances. His recovery from throat cancer in the mid-2010s was followed by a return to the stage and further work with the band.

Aviation has been a major second career. Dickinson trained as a commercial pilot and later flew for Astraeus Airlines. He piloted Iron Maiden's customized aircraft, known as "Ed Force One", during several world tours, an experience documented in the film Iron Maiden: Flight 666. He has also worked in aircraft maintenance and aviation training, while maintaining interests in fencing, radio, and writing.

In 2017, Dickinson published the autobiography What Does This Button Do?. He returned to solo recording with The Mandrake Project in 2024, a heavy metal album accompanied by a comic-book narrative. The project demonstrated that, despite his enduring association with Iron Maiden, Dickinson remains an independent creative force with interests extending well beyond conventional rock stardom.
