Brainpower is the stage name of Dutch rapper, songwriter, producer, and occasional actor Gerrit-Jan "Gert-Jan" Mulder. Born on February 5, 1975, in Antwerp, Belgium, he grew up in Alphen aan den Rijn in the Netherlands and later based much of his work in Amsterdam. He became one of the most recognizable figures in Dutch-language hip-hop, combining technically intricate rhymes with accessible songwriting and a broad interest in music, language, and popular culture.
Mulder began rapping in the 1980s and developed his public profile during the Dutch hip-hop scene's expansion in the 1990s. In 1998, he won the Grote Prijs van Nederland, a major national competition for emerging musicians. His first significant chart appearance came in 1999, when he contributed to "Zoete Inval," a collaboration led by Extince. Brainpower continued to explore different formats on The Box P.U.R.E. Session, Even stil, and later the paired albums Hart and Hard. His music ranged from energetic party tracks to personal songs about relationships, loss, ambition, and self-examination. The single "Alles" became another major Dutch hit, while later projects such as Determination, The New York Sessions, and Barlito's Way documented his continuing interest in expanding his sound and working with musicians from outside the traditional hip-hop sphere.
