Biography

Billy Ray Cyrus (born August 25, 1961) is an American country singer, songwriter, and actor whose career has moved between mainstream country, pop culture, television, and crossover collaborations. Born William Ray Cyrus in Flatwoods, Kentucky, he developed an interest in music while growing up in a musical family and later played in the rock band Sly Dog. After pursuing a recording career in Nashville, he signed with Mercury Records and began preparing the album that would make him an international star.

Cyrus broke through in 1992 with his debut album, Some Gave All. The record became one of the most successful country debuts in history, spending 17 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 and topping the country album chart. Its defining single, "Achy Breaky Heart", combined a simple, highly memorable hook with an energetic video that helped propel line dancing into the mainstream. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, became a major international hit, and established Cyrus as one of the most recognizable figures in early-1990s country music. Other singles from the album, including "Could've Been Me" and "She's Not Cryin' Anymore", demonstrated that his appeal extended beyond a novelty-driven breakthrough.

Cyrus followed with It Won't Be the Last in 1993. The album also opened at number one on the country chart and produced several successful singles, including "In the Heart of a Woman". Although his subsequent Mercury albums did not match the enormous commercial impact of his debut, Cyrus continued to record steadily through the 1990s and 2000s. Releases such as Storm in the Heartland, Trail of Tears, Southern Rain, and Back to Tennessee showed him working within a traditional country framework while experimenting with contemporary production and more personal material. He has maintained a substantial catalog of studio albums and singles across several labels.

Acting became an important second part of Cyrus' public career. From 2001 to 2004, he played the lead role of Dr. Clint Cassidy in the television drama Doc. He reached a younger and much larger television audience as Robby Ray Stewart on Disney Channel's Hannah Montana, appearing alongside his daughter Miley Cyrus from 2006 to 2011. The role connected him with a new generation while allowing him to retain his identity as a working country musician. He later starred in the CMT sitcom Still the King and appeared in other television and film projects.

Cyrus experienced one of the most striking revivals of his career in 2019, when he appeared on the remix of Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road". The genre-blending track became a global phenomenon and gave Cyrus his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Its record-setting chart run introduced him to audiences far beyond country music and earned him two Grammy Awards, for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video.

Known for his raspy voice, accessible songwriting, and willingness to move between musical and television formats, Billy Ray Cyrus remains associated both with the country-pop boom of the early 1990s and with one of the most successful cross-generational collaborations of the streaming era.
