Bif Naked is the stage name of Beth Torbert, a Canadian singer, songwriter, poet, actress, author, and television personality. Born in New Delhi, India, on June 15, 1971, she was adopted by American missionaries and spent parts of her childhood in the United States and Manitoba before her family settled in Winnipeg. She studied theater at the University of Winnipeg and initially explored performance through comedy, poetry, and underground music. Her nickname, "Bif," originated as a mispronunciation of Beth.
Before establishing herself as a solo artist, Torbert performed with Winnipeg punk and alternative groups including Gorilla Gorilla and Chrome Dog. She began her solo recording career with the independently released album *Bif Naked* in 1994. The record introduced the direct, confrontational style that would become central to her work: punk energy, pop hooks, confessional lyrics, and a theatrical stage presence. Her early recordings helped position her within Canada's independent rock scene while also attracting attention from larger labels.
Her breakthrough came with *I Bificus* in 1998. The album combined aggressive alternative rock with electronic textures and sharply personal songwriting. It produced several of her best-known songs, including "Moment of Weakness," "Lucky," "Twitch," "I Died," and "Spaceman." The latter became a major Canadian hit, while the video for "Moment of Weakness" received prominent exposure on MTV's *Total Request Live*. *I Bificus* eventually achieved platinum status in Canada and established Bif Naked as one of the country's most visible female rock performers of the late 1990s.
She followed it with *Purge* in 2001, a darker and more forceful album that expanded her hard-edged sound without abandoning her talent for melodic choruses. The compilation *Essentially Naked* appeared in 2003, and *Superbeautifulmonster* arrived in 2005. Her music was frequently used in film and television, including *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*, *Charmed*, *The West Wing*, and *Celebrity Deathmatch*. She also contributed guest vocals to recordings by artists such as Strapping Young Lad and Dead Celebrity Status.
Bif Naked's career has extended well beyond recording. She has acted in films and television programs, voiced characters in the *SSX* video game series, hosted CBC's *ZeD*, and presented the combat-sports program *Bodog Fight*. Her spoken-word release *Okenspay Ordway: Things I Forgot to Tell Mommy* reflected her long-standing interest in poetry and autobiographical performance. In 2016, she published the memoir *I, Bificus*, revisiting her artistic development and the experiences that shaped her public identity.
In 2008, she announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent treatment. The experience informed *The Promise*, released in 2009, an album recorded during chemotherapy and dedicated to her fans. She later issued *Bif Naked Forever: Acoustic Hits and Other Delights*, which reworked earlier songs alongside new material.
After a long gap between studio albums, she returned with *Champion* in 2024. The album collected recent singles such as "Jim," "Broke Into Your Car," and "Rollerdome" with newly recorded material. Her career and resilience were also examined in the 2025 documentary *Bif Naked*, directed by Pollyanna Hardwicke-Brown. Across music, television, writing, and advocacy, Bif Naked has remained known for an outspoken artistic persona, emotionally candid songs, and a refusal to separate performance from personal conviction.
