Biography

Benjamin Michael Lee (born September 11, 1978) is an Australian musician, singer-songwriter, producer, and actor. Known for bright, melodic indie pop and an unusually open-hearted lyrical style, he has built a career that moves freely between lo-fi punk, polished pop, experimental songwriting, film, theater, and collaborative projects.

Lee began performing in Sydney as a teenager with Noise Addict, a lo-fi punk band formed in the early 1990s. The group attracted attention with a bedroom-recorded demo and soon came to the notice of Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and the Beastie Boys' Mike D. Noise Addict released music through the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal label, including the 1994 EP Young and Jaded and the 1995 album Meet the Real You. Lee's teenage songwriting was direct and self-conscious, combining punk economy with a strong pop instinct. Noise Addict later toured with Sebadoh before breaking up in the mid-1990s. Lee also spent a short period as a member of the Australian alternative band Gerling.

While still young, Lee established himself as a solo artist. His first albums, Grandpaw Would (1995) and Something to Remember Me By (1997), retained some of the rawness of his early work but showed a growing interest in personal songwriting and classic pop arrangement. Breathing Tornados (1998) marked a significant expansion of his sound. Released through Modular Recordings, it introduced more prominent synthesizers and studio production while preserving Lee's conversational vocal style. The album included "Cigarettes Will Kill You," which became one of his best-known early songs and earned major Australian award nominations.

Lee continued developing his sound on hey you. yes you. (2002), but his international breakthrough came with Awake Is the New Sleep (2005). Produced by Brad Wood, the album balanced acoustic instruments, layered arrangements, and unabashedly optimistic songwriting. Its singles "Gamble Everything for Love," "Catch My Disease," and "We're All in This Together" brought Lee a wider audience. "Catch My Disease" became his signature song, reaching the Australian top 30 and gaining further exposure through American television. Awake Is the New Sleep also became his most successful Australian album and earned Lee several ARIA Awards, including Best Male Artist and Best Independent Release.

Lee's later work has been marked by stylistic curiosity. Ripe (2007) continued his melodic pop approach, while The Rebirth of Venus (2009) and Deeper into Dream (2011) explored more reflective and conceptual territory. Ayahuasca: Welcome to the Work (2013) adopted a more explicitly spiritual framework, and Love Is the Great Rebellion (2015) returned to expansive pop songwriting. He subsequently released the more personal and experimental Freedom, Love and the Recuperation of the Human Mind (2016), the family-oriented Ben Lee Sings Songs About Islam for the Whole Family (2017), Quarter Century Classix (2019), and I'm Fun! (2022).

Collaboration has remained central to Lee's career. In 2003, he formed the short-lived supergroup the Bens with Ben Folds and Ben Kweller. He later worked with actor and musician Josh Radnor as Radnor & Lee, releasing two albums. Lee has also produced music for other artists, including Margaret Cho, and contributed to film and theater projects. His acting career includes the leading role in the Australian film The Rage in Placid Lake (2003). In 2024, he released This One's for the Old Headz, extending a catalog defined by reinvention, candor, and a lasting commitment to melody.
