Bauhaus were an English rock band formed in Northampton in 1978 by guitarist Daniel Ash, bassist David J, drummer Kevin Haskins, and vocalist Peter Murphy. Emerging from the late-1970s post-punk underground, they helped establish the musical and visual language later associated with gothic rock. Their sound combined severe guitar lines, echoing bass, stripped-down drumming, theatrical vocals, and an interest in dub, glam rock, funk, psychedelia, and experimental music.
Ash, David J, and Haskins had previously played together in a group called the Craze. When Murphy joined, the quartet initially performed under the name Bauhaus 1919, referencing the German art movement. The name was shortened to Bauhaus in 1979, the same year the band released its debut single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead," on the independent label Small Wonder Records.
Running for more than nine minutes, "Bela Lugosi's Dead" was unlike most contemporary singles. Its spacious rhythm, skeletal guitar, and Murphy's dramatic baritone created a tense, cinematic atmosphere, while its subject matter drew on the imagery of classic horror cinema. The single did not become a mainstream chart hit, but it developed a lasting reputation as one of the defining recordings of gothic rock. Its impact was reinforced by the band's striking appearance and theatrical live performances, which made Bauhaus as visually distinctive as they were musically unconventional.
After signing with 4AD, Bauhaus issued singles including "Dark Entries," "Terror Couple Kill Colonel," and "The Passion of Lovers." Their debut album, In the Flat Field (1980), presented the band's most concentrated and abrasive side. It was followed by Mask (1981), which broadened their palette with keyboards, acoustic textures, saxophone, and more pronounced funk rhythms. Songs such as "Kick in the Eye," "The Passion of Lovers," and "Dancing" showed that Bauhaus were not content to remain within a fixed post-punk formula.
The Sky's Gone Out (1982) continued that expansion. The album included the atmospheric "Spirit" and a dramatic cover of David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust," which became one of the band's best-known recordings and helped the album reach No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. Their final original-era studio album, Burning from the Inside (1983), reflected the growing independence of the four members. Murphy was less involved in parts of the recording because of illness and touring circumstances, while the other members took a more prominent role in shaping the material. The album included "She's in Parties," Bauhaus' final UK Top 30 single.
Bauhaus split in 1983, after which the members pursued separate projects. Murphy began a substantial solo career, while Ash, David J, and Haskins formed Love and Rockets. Ash and Haskins had also worked in the experimental group Tones on Tail. These projects demonstrated that Bauhaus had been more than a single singer surrounded by a distinctive backing band; each member continued to explore different approaches to songwriting, performance, and production.
The original lineup reunited for tours in 1998 and again during the 2000s, including a prominent appearance at the 2005 Coachella festival. In 2008, the band released Go Away White, its first album of new material in 25 years. Recorded quickly and with a deliberately direct approach, it was presented as the group's final studio statement. Further reunions took place in 2019 and 2022, but the band's later activity remained intermittent. Bauhaus' influence endures through their records, performances, imagery, and music videos, which helped transform the darker edges of post-punk into a lasting alternative-rock culture.
