Wiki

Biography

Ashlee Nicole Simpson, born October 3, 1984, in Waco, Texas, is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. Although she entered the public eye as the younger sister of singer Jessica Simpson, Ashlee established a distinct identity through pop-rock music, confessional songwriting, and a more rebellious performance style.

Simpson began performing at an early age as a dancer. She trained at the School of American Ballet and later moved with her family to Los Angeles, where she worked as a backup dancer during Jessica Simpson's early touring career. At the same time, she pursued acting, appearing in television programs including Malcolm in the Middle and 7th Heaven. Her role as Cecilia Smith on 7th Heaven, which she played during the show's seventh and eighth seasons, gave her a recurring television profile before her music career took off.

Her first recordings included "Just Let Me Cry", contributed to the soundtrack of the 2003 film Freaky Friday. Simpson then signed with Geffen Records and began developing an album built around pop-rock arrangements and songs drawn from her own experiences. Her breakthrough came in 2004 with "Pieces of Me", a bright, guitar-driven single that reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 and became her signature song.

The single was closely followed by Autobiography, Simpson's debut studio album. Released in July 2004, it entered the Billboard 200 at number one and eventually received a triple-platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. The album combined polished mainstream production with a personal, diary-like approach, while songs such as "Shadow" and "La La" helped define Simpson's image as a pop singer with a sharper edge. MTV documented the album's creation in The Ashlee Simpson Show, a reality series that expanded her audience and made the recording process part of her public persona.

Her rapid rise was accompanied by intense media attention. In October 2004, a vocal-track mishap during her appearance on Saturday Night Live exposed the use of prerecorded vocal support after Simpson had experienced vocal problems. The incident became a major controversy and temporarily overshadowed her music, though she continued touring and recording.

Simpson's second album, I Am Me, arrived in 2005 and again debuted at number one in the United States. It produced the singles "Boyfriend" and "L.O.V.E." and was later certified platinum. Her subsequent acting work included a leading role in the film Undiscovered, while her stage career expanded when she played Roxie Hart in productions of the musical Chicago in London's West End and on Broadway.

For Bittersweet World (2008), Simpson moved toward a more electronic, dance-pop sound influenced by 1980s production. Though it received a more favorable critical response than some of her earlier work, its commercial performance was more modest. She later joined the cast of the 2009 television revival Melrose Place as Violet Foster and returned to Chicago on Broadway.

Simpson released the independent single "Bat for a Heart" in 2012 and later recorded with her husband Evan Ross as Ashlee + Evan. Their joint work included the 2018 EP Ashlee + Evan and the single "I Do". After a long period focused away from solo recording and regular touring, Simpson returned to the stage in 2025 with the I Am Me residency at Voltaire at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. The shows revisited the songs that established her as one of the recognizable pop-rock voices of the 2000s.
