Biography

Alec Empire is the stage name of Alexander Wilke-Steinhof, a Berlin electronic musician, producer, DJ and label founder whose work helped define the digital hardcore movement. Born on May 2, 1972, in West Berlin, he began playing guitar and became involved with punk at an early age. He also absorbed hip-hop, breakdancing, acid house and techno, influences that later shaped his combination of abrasive electronics, breakbeats and politically charged performance.

Empire first recorded under several aliases, including LX Empire, and issued early material through labels associated with the German underground techno scene. In 1992, he formed Atari Teenage Riot with Hanin Elias and Carl Crack. The group fused punk's confrontational attitude with distorted electronic rhythms, acid synthesizers, shouted vocals and rapidly edited breakbeats. Their music rejected the separation between rock and dance culture and promoted an openly anti-fascist, anti-authoritarian stance. The resulting style became known as digital hardcore.

When Atari Teenage Riot's planned deal with Phonogram collapsed, Empire used money connected with the agreement to establish Digital Hardcore Recordings in 1994. The label became an important platform for confrontational electronic music, releasing work by Empire and artists such as EC8OR, DJ Bleed and Sonic Subjunkies. It also helped develop a network of musicians who treated punk energy, rave technology and independent production as part of the same musical language.

Empire's solo career developed in parallel with Atari Teenage Riot but was considerably broader in scope. His debut album, Generation Star Wars, appeared in 1994 on Mille Plateaux and presented a harsh, experimental mixture of breakbeats, noise and electronic abstraction. Low on Ice (The Iceland Sessions), released in 1995, moved toward stark ambient and atmospheric textures, while Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5 and Les Etoiles des Filles Mortes explored more fragmented and conceptual forms. These records established that Empire was not limited to the aggressive digital hardcore sound associated with his band.

The Destroyer, first released in 1996 through Digital Hardcore Recordings, brought his solo work closer to Atari Teenage Riot's intensity. Its extreme tempos, heavy distortion and fractured breakbeats have led it to be regarded as an important early breakcore recording. Empire continued to move between styles on Miss Black America, Alec Empire vs. Elvis Presley and Intelligence and Sacrifice. The latter, released in 2001, was structured as a double album: one disc emphasized vocal-driven industrial hardcore, while the other focused on instrumental electronic experimentation.

His later albums included Futurist and The Golden Foretaste of Heaven. The latter introduced a more streamlined, song-oriented approach while retaining his interest in electronic abrasion and dystopian themes. Empire also worked as a remixer and producer for artists outside the digital hardcore scene, including Bjork, Cibo Matto and Buffalo Daughter.

Atari Teenage Riot's activities resumed at various points after the group's original period, and Empire remained closely associated with its confrontational live identity. Beyond club and festival music, he composed the soundtrack for Tarek Ehlail's German science-fiction thriller Volt. Released in 2017, the score used minimalist electronics, tense drones and bursts of noise to reflect the film's authoritarian setting. Across his career, Alec Empire has remained notable for treating electronic music not simply as a production method, but as a vehicle for political confrontation, technological experimentation and stylistic reinvention.
