Adam Richard Sandler (born September 9, 1966) is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and musician whose career has moved between stand-up comedy, television, popular film, dramatic acting, and music-based comedy. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and studied at New York University, graduating in 1991. While developing his stand-up act, he appeared in a recurring role on the television series The Cosby Show and performed regularly in comedy clubs. IMDb, "Adam Sandler - Biography."
Sandler became widely known after joining Saturday Night Live in 1990 as a writer and featured performer. His work on the program combined exaggerated characters, eccentric voices, topical humor, and original songs. Among his best-known musical comedy pieces from this period was "The Chanukah Song," which became a recurring part of his public identity. He also released comedy albums, including Theyre All Gonna Laugh at You!, What the Hell Happened to Me?, and Stan and Judys Kid, each of which received Grammy Award nominations for Best Comedy Album.
After leaving Saturday Night Live in 1995, Sandler established himself as a leading performer in Hollywood comedies. Billy Madison (1995) and Happy Gilmore (1996) introduced a screen persona built around childish behavior, sudden anger, physical comedy, and an unconventional sense of optimism. The Wedding Singer (1998) showed a more romantic and emotionally accessible side, while The Waterboy (1998) and Big Daddy (1999) confirmed his popularity with mainstream audiences. He later appeared in films including Mr. Deeds (2002), 50 First Dates (2004), Click (2006), Grown Ups (2010), and Just Go with It (2011).
Sandler has also exercised considerable creative control over his projects. In 1999, he founded Happy Madison Productions, which has produced many of his films as well as work by other comedians. He has frequently combined acting with writing and producing, helping create a consistent circle of performers and filmmakers around his productions. His film career has consequently included both broad studio comedies and projects with a more personal or experimental tone.
His dramatic work has been particularly important in reshaping his critical reputation. In Paul Thomas Andersons Punch-Drunk Love (2002), Sandler played an emotionally isolated man whose awkwardness and volatility were treated with unusual restraint. Noah Baumbachs The Meyerowitz Stories (2017) gave him another acclaimed dramatic role, while the Safdie brothers Uncut Gems (2019) cast him as Howard Ratner, a compulsive New York jeweler whose gambling and ambition drive the films escalating tension. Sandler won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead for Uncut Gems. IMDb, "Adam Sandler - Awards."
From the 2010s onward, Sandler developed a major relationship with Netflix, appearing in and producing films such as The Ridiculous 6, The Week Of, Murder Mystery, Hubie Halloween, Hustle, and Leo. The partnership also supported his return to stand-up with Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (2018), which received an Emmy nomination, and Adam Sandler: Love You (2024).
