2 Unlimited is a Belgian-Dutch dance music act formed in Antwerp in 1991 by producers Jean-Paul De Coster and Phil Wilde. The project combined Wilde and De Coster's electronic production with the distinctive performances of Dutch rapper Ray Slijngaard and vocalist Anita Doth. Although the producers shaped the music and controlled the studio concept, Slijngaard and Doth became the public faces of the act and helped define its energetic stage identity.
The group's first single, "Get Ready for This," established the formula that would make 2 Unlimited one of the most successful Eurodance acts of the early 1990s. Built around a forceful techno rhythm, repeated vocal hooks, and Slijngaard's commanding rap, the track became a major European hit. Its lasting popularity in the United States developed more gradually, but the song eventually became especially associated with sports arenas, television broadcasts, and team introductions.
The debut album, *Get Ready!*, followed in 1992 and produced further international singles, including "Twilight Zone," "Workaholic," and "The Magic Friend." The combination of hard-edged dance production and accessible pop structures allowed 2 Unlimited to cross between clubs, radio, and mainstream television. Their music was direct rather than subtle, emphasizing momentum, repetition, and immediate crowd response.
The act reached its commercial peak with *No Limits!* in 1993. Its title track, "No Limit," became a defining Eurodance anthem, topping charts in numerous territories and giving the group its broadest international exposure. The album also included "Tribal Dance," "Faces," and "Let the Beat Control Your Body." In the following year, *Real Things* continued the group's high-energy approach while adding a somewhat broader range of melodic and atmospheric material. Singles such as "The Real Thing," "Here I Go," and "No One" confirmed that 2 Unlimited's success was not based on a single novelty record.
After several years of intensive touring and recording, the original lineup ended its run in 1996. A revised version of 2 Unlimited appeared in 1998 with singers Romy van Ooijen and Marjon van Iwaarden. The album *II* and singles including "Wanna Get Up," "Edge of Heaven," and "Never Surrender" demonstrated that the brand remained commercially viable, but the new lineup did not reproduce the impact of the original partnership. The project was subsequently discontinued.
Slijngaard and Doth reunited in the late 2000s under the name Ray & Anita, performing the songs that had made them famous. In 2012, they reconciled with De Coster and resumed work under the 2 Unlimited name. A full concert followed in Belgium in 2013, and a Steve Aoki remix of "Get Ready for This" introduced the classic track to a newer dance audience. Doth later left the touring act, but 2 Unlimited continued to appear on nostalgia and dance festival bills.
2 Unlimited's influence rests less on album innovation than on the efficiency of its sound and its exceptional command of mass audiences. Songs such as "Get Ready for This," "Twilight Zone," "No Limit," and "Tribal Dance" remain among the most recognizable recordings of the Eurodance era. Their continued use in sports and entertainment has kept the act's music in circulation well beyond its original chart period.
