4-20-2005: The title of the song is "SOMEWHERE" from the musical West Side Story and it is performed by IAN McCULLOCH and was sung just for the commercial and is not yet available commercially on CD--perhaps he has an upcoming album release that might have that song? I'm not sure. His other albums are SLIDELING in 2003 on the SpinART label and CANDLELAND in 1989 on Sire. This is a MALE VOCALIST singing, so how anyone could think that it was Etta James is beyond me--a review of her discography shows that she has not ever recorded that song. The ads are supposedly done by the MODERNISTA agency--too bad TIAA-CREF appears not to be capitalizing on the ad's popularity by not even making information about it available on their website or through press release. Enjoy the other versions!! (KEITH N.)---------------------------------------- > > Does anyone know who sings the song "A Place for Us" in the TIAA CREF commercial? Thanks for your help.
>
> I believe there are three versions of the TIAA CREF commercial, all featuring the same song, "Somewhere". One of them (showing shots of a large classroom of students) is Etta James, an outstanding rendition. I don't yet know who the performers are for the other versions (one set in a museum, another in a hospital).

I found on Soulful Detroit Forum the following indicating Etta James has not YET recorded the song we are all talking about.

Go to this link. It is the link for the company that made the commercials and they have all the ads and artists listed.

There are different singers doing the song in different versions of the commercial. I know for sure in one version the song is sung by Ian McCulloch, who was (is) the lead singer for 80's band Echo and the Bunnymen.

I'd be interested in knowing who the other 2 artists are who perform the song 'Somewhere'
in the tiaa cref commercials.
Etta James is amazing, but I like the others as well, each one evoking different emotions.
Thanks in advance for the coonsideration, I hope someone out there can help.

take care all,
Tony

There are several versions, which include: Etta James, Chan Marshall, Ian McCulloch, Vic Chessnut & Liz Durrett, David Sylvian. My favorite is Etta James’ version. To hear them, go to: http://tiaa-cref.org/flash/greatergood/main.html

I think it's Brad Roberts, of the band Crash Test Dummies.
