Synopsis

Mos Def's video follows a chance encounter that grows into a fast-moving romance. After spotting Sharice around the neighborhood, he finally connects with her at a friend's party. Their chemistry develops through dates and intimate moments, but the relationship soon becomes uncertain when she pulls away and refuses commitment. Still emotionally invested, Mos is left stunned when a friend reports seeing Sharice working at a strip club. The video mirrors the song's episodic storytelling, presenting the romance as a stylish, bittersweet urban vignette.

Factoids & Trivia

• Released in 1999, "Ms. Fat Booty" was the lead single from Mos Def's debut solo album, *Black on Both Sides*, issued through Rawkus Records.

• The song was produced by Ayatollah, who built the beat around multiple samples from Aretha Franklin's 1965 recording "One Step Ahead."

• The song's narrative is divided into clearly marked scenes, giving the video and recording the structure of a short relationship drama rather than a conventional verse-and-hook performance piece.

• "Ms. Fat Booty" became one of Mos Def's signature songs. It reached No. 20 on the US Hot Rap Songs chart, No. 54 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and No. 85 in the United Kingdom.

• The track was followed by "Ms. Fat Booty 2," featuring Ghostface Killah, which appeared on the 2000 compilation *Lyricist Lounge 2*.
