Synopsis

Tori Amos performs "Bliss" with her touring band in a video assembled from concert and backstage footage. The edit moves between Amos at the piano, musicians preparing and performing, and vivid glimpses of the devoted audience, giving the clip the atmosphere of an intimate tour documentary rather than a scripted narrative. The result captures the physical intensity of Amos' live shows and the unusually close relationship between the singer, her band, and her fans.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was assembled from footage shot during the final two shows of Amos' Plugged '98 tour in Michigan. The tour ended at the Breslin Events Center in East Lansing on December 3, 1998.
  • "Bliss" had not yet been written when the concert footage was recorded. The song was added later during the editing process, making the video an example of existing tour material being repurposed for a new single.
  • The original footage was recorded with a planned live DVD in mind. That project was never released, although material from it became the basis for the "Bliss" video.
  • The clip premiered on MTV's 120 Minutes on August 15, 1999.
  • Its backstage sequences and prominent fan shots reflect the live ensemble era documented on To Venus and Back, rather than Amos' earlier videos, which often centered almost entirely on her solo persona.
  • The song opens To Venus and Back, the 1999 double album that paired the studio collection Venus Orbiting with the live set Venus Live, Still Orbiting.
