Synopsis

Tool's "Aenema" video unfolds as a surreal stop-motion nightmare centered on a strange humanoid creature in an enclosed aquatic chamber. A hose-like appendage extends from its body and steadily fills the room with water. As the creature moves through the space, dresses itself, and appears alongside fleeting embryo imagery, the setting becomes increasingly claustrophobic and unnatural. Near the conclusion, a suited human figure handles the water-filled container holding the creature, reducing the bizarre world to an unsettling object of observation.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video uses stop-motion animation rather than footage of Tool performing. Its visual design was created by Cam de Leon.
  • "Aenema" was issued as a promotional single from Tool's 1996 album *Aenima* and received its video in 1997.
  • The video was later included in *Salival*, Tool's video and music collection released in 2000.
  • The song's title combines "anima," associated with the soul, and "enema." That wordplay connects the video's imagery of bodily processes, water, and cleansing with the song's broader idea of purging a corrupted environment.
  • "Aenema" won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance at the 40th Grammy Awards in 1998.
  • The song reached No. 25 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart in August 1997.
