Synopsis

Son Of Bazerk perform "Change The Style" as if they were guests on a wildly exaggerated 1960s television pop show. The clip jumps between retro performance setups, mock girl-group choreography, beat-band poses, and Son Of Bazerk's James Brown-inspired frontman. A record spinner wearing oven gloves adds to the deliberately absurd presentation. The visual approach mirrors the song's own rapid shifts between hip hop, soul, reggae, doo-wop, and punk, turning the video into a fast-moving collage of Black pop and rock traditions.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Change The Style" was Son Of Bazerk's first single and first became publicly associated with the group in December 1990.
  • The video was produced by Chicago-based H-Gun, which used the project to inaugurate a new 8,000-square-foot production complex containing a recording studio and hard-disk editing facilities.
  • Public Enemy's Flavor Flav flew to Chicago between engagements to make a guest appearance in the clip.
  • The song was produced by the Bomb Squad and featured Public Enemy affiliate Terminator X. Its production deliberately collides sections associated with soul, dancehall reggae, doo-wop, and punk rather than smoothing them into a conventional rap arrangement.
  • The video's old-fashioned television setting gives the song's title a visual meaning: the performers repeatedly move between different eras and styles of popular music instead of remaining in one fixed genre.
  • Son Of Bazerk were formed by Bomb Squad member Hank Shocklee and released their debut album, "Bazerk Bazerk Bazerk," in 1991. The album's intentionally chaotic presentation helped establish the group as an unusually adventurous side branch of the Public Enemy orbit.
