Synopsis

The Smashing Pumpkins perform "Zero" inside a decadent Roman-inspired mansion occupied by wealthy guests in masquerade costumes. Around them, bizarre spectacles and freak-show tableaux unfold, creating an atmosphere of excess, menace, and theatrical decay. The band members appear in black clothing and gothic makeup, often framed in unnervingly tight close-ups as they stare directly into the camera. The result is less a conventional narrative than a stylized portrait of alienation, spectacle, and grotesque privilege.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed in Los Angeles in March 1996 and first aired on April 23, 1996.

• Its mansion setting includes masquerade guests, grotesque side-show imagery, and a visible portrait of President James K. Polk.

• The band members' extreme close-ups were designed to feel unusually direct. Rather than relying on elaborate camera moves, the performance often places the musicians almost confrontationally close to the viewer.

• Commentary included with the 2001 Greatest Hits Video Collection (1991-2000) presents the clip as deliberately creepy and divisive. Billy Corgan noted that viewers tended to either love it or strongly dislike it.

• The production reportedly used around 50 party guests. The band played live material and improvised rather than simply miming to the finished recording, while the extras were expected to react to the performance.

• "Zero" was one of several Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness videos preserved with behind-the-scenes material and commentary on the later video collection.
