Synopsis

The Offspring perform "Gone Away" inside a dark, apparently abandoned slaughterhouse. Dexter Holland sings beneath a bare hanging light bulb, while the other band members play in separate, shadowy rooms lit by similar bulbs. The stark setting and grainy black-and-white imagery give the performance a haunted, claustrophobic atmosphere. As the song builds, Holland sings into a suspended microphone that swings through the frame, and the video gradually fades into darkness.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed on February 11, 1997, at the Morrell Meat Building in Los Angeles.
  • Its intentionally grainy look and decaying industrial location were a sharp visual contrast to the band's more playful and stunt-driven videos.
  • The hanging light bulb is the video's central visual motif. Each band member is associated with a separate pool of light, while Holland repeatedly returns to the most prominent bulb.
  • The closing image of the swinging suspended microphone adds a physical sense of instability to the song's otherwise static performance.
  • A storyboard version of the video was included alongside the finished clip on The Offspring's 2005 Complete Music Video Collection DVD.
  • "Gone Away" was the second single from Ixnay on the Hombre, released in 1997. The song was later reworked as a piano ballad for the band's 2021 album Let the Bad Times Roll.
