Synopsis

A businessman moves through a gray New York day, passing the Colgate Clock and the World Trade Center while reading increasingly grim headlines in The New York Times. Surrounded by homelessness, violence, and emotional isolation, he climbs to a rooftop and prepares to jump. As Collective Soul perform in intercut scenes, a dove lands on his arm and interrupts his despair. Feeding it a bagel, he notices ants below and recognizes a shared struggle in the people around him, regaining perspective and choosing life.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was released in 1995 to support Collective Soul's self-titled second album and the song's run as a major rock and pop hit.
  • Its New York setting is documented through recognizable landmarks, including the Colgate Clock and the World Trade Center, which appears in the distance. The towers place the video firmly in a pre-September 11, 2001 visual record of the city.
  • The narrative is presented more like a short film than a conventional performance clip. The band appears in brief intercut shots while the businessman carries most of the storyline.
  • The video's color design follows the character's emotional state. Its early scenes use cold blue and purple tones, while the imagery becomes brighter and more colorful after the dove interrupts his suicide attempt.
  • The song reached No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. It was also the first No. 1 on Billboard's Triple-A chart.
  • The official high-definition version was published by Collective Soul's official YouTube channel in 2009, helping preserve the video for online audiences.

Has the sweet breeze blown?
Has all the kindness gone?
Hope still lingers on.
I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City
And I don't know why.

Are we listening
To hymns of offering?
Have we eyes to see
That love is gathering?
All the words that I've been reading
