Synopsis

The Afghan Whigs perform in a feverish, theatrical setting that resembles a Pentecostal or voodoo church gathering. Greg Dulli, dressed in a black feather boa, presides over a congregation populated by colorful outsiders, while the band plays amid bursts of impressionistic imagery. Rapid flash frames, abrupt focus shifts, and confrontational close-ups give the video a disorienting, blaxploitation-inspired atmosphere. The result is less a literal narrative than a dark performance piece built around menace, swagger, ritual, and the song's volatile sense of revenge.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was released in 1996 to promote "Honky's Ladder," the lead single from the Afghan Whigs' album *Black Love*.
  • "Honky's Ladder" was also issued as an EP. Its additional tracks included "Blame, Etc.," "If I Only Had a Heart" from *The Wizard of Oz*, and a cover of Radiohead's "Creep."
  • The clip's visual world reflects the Afghan Whigs' blend of aggressive alternative rock with soul, funk, and R&B influences. The church imagery and exaggerated character types push that mixture into deliberately lurid territory.
  • Greg Dulli's black feather boa and pulpit-like presence turn the performance into a piece of rock theater rather than a conventional band video.
  • The song was prominent enough to receive MTV exposure during the 1996 promotional campaign for *Black Love*, helping make its video part of the band's mid-1990s visual identity.
  • Official versions of the video have circulated in both standard and explicit forms.
