Synopsis

The Afghan Whigs perform their dark, minor-key version of the Supremes' "Come See About Me" as a house band in a seedy go-go bar. Greg Dulli alternates between singing with the group and appearing as a drunken, lovelorn customer, surrounded by dancers and a smoky nightlife atmosphere. The setting turns the song's pleading romantic language into a scene of sleaze, loneliness, and emotional desperation, blurring the line between performer, spectator, exploiter, and victim.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The song is a radically darker reinterpretation of the Supremes' 1964 Motown hit, replacing its polished pop feel with a brooding, minor-key arrangement.
  • The recording appeared on the Afghan Whigs' 1992 EP *Uptown Avondale*, which also included the band's version of "My World Is Empty Without You."
  • The clip's go-go-bar setting became one of the band's most memorable visual departures from conventional alternative-rock performance videos.
  • Greg Dulli plays both the frontman and a visibly intoxicated patron, giving the video a deliberately uncomfortable perspective on desire and voyeurism.
  • Philadelphia radio personality Dan Reed makes a cameo appearance in the video.
