Synopsis

Set inside a brightly lit nuclear power plant, the video presents "Kernkraft 400" as a bizarre television infomercial. Florian Senfter appears as a flamboyant host, introducing two models and a range of supposedly superior nuclear-powered products. A Kernkraft 400 microwave cooks food faster than a conventional one, while its tanning bed produces a seemingly perfect tan. The increasingly strange demonstrations culminate with the host examining an enhanced vibrator, as the models rush toward him and the production crew reveals its own unusual safety precautions.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The official video was made in 2000, after "Kernkraft 400" began attracting international licensing interest. Senfter was given the script and traveled to Cologne to appear in it, but he was not involved in writing the concept.
  • Senfter specifically liked that the idea avoided the standard electronic-music video formula of a DJ, a woman, and a fast car in a desert.
  • The clip was conceived as a nuclear-powered infomercial, with the Kernkraft 400 brand applied to household and personal-care products. The escalating side effects turn a familiar sales format into surreal comedy.
  • Senfter later recalled that the makeup artist advised him to pluck his prominent unibrow if he became famous. He says he kept that promise.
  • There was an earlier, separate lo-fi video for the original 1999 version of the track. Made for approximately 500 Deutschmarks, it involved a valuable "Kernkraft brain," zombies, machine guns, and small electronically triggered effects.
  • The melody of "Kernkraft 400" reworks "Star Dust," a tune by David Whittaker originally heard in the 1984 Commodore 64 game *Lazy Jones*. The track's later life as a stadium anthem helped make the melody recognizable far beyond the club scene.
