Synopsis

Set against a dreamlike Alice in Wonderland backdrop, the video follows a woman who leaves a ballroom dance and slips into a strange, storybook world. Her transformation leads through a garden and maze, where XTC appear amid theatrical scenes involving painted flowers and surreal behavior. The fantasy gradually turns darker, ending with the woman diving into water and floating upside down. The clip mirrors the song's portrait of someone trapped in an artificial world of romance, privilege, and illusion.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Wonderland" was released as a single in June 1983 and was taken from XTC's album "Mummer." It was written by Colin Moulding.
  • The song stands apart from much of XTC's earlier guitar-centered work through its prominent synthesizer textures. The studio recording uses both a Prophet-5 and a Korg synthesizer.
  • The video uses a deliberately theatrical, low-budget fantasy style rather than attempting a literal adaptation of Lewis Carroll. Its ballroom, garden, maze, painted flowers, and underwater imagery create a visual counterpart to the song's language about a "mysterious" and "superficial" wonderland.
  • The recording features drummer Terry Chambers, one of his final contributions to XTC before his departure from the band.
  • "Wonderland" was the only single from "Mummer" issued in the United States by Geffen Records.
  • The video's romantic-fantasy imagery has given it a mixed legacy among XTC listeners: some regard it as an unusually fitting match for the song, while others see its Alice-inspired love story as conspicuously dated and overly literal.

Lyrics

Can't you see
Love and affection
When it's put
In you direction
Wrapped in your mysterious wonderland
No fast car
Can make you grow up
Gentlemen
You think you've sewn up
Locked in your wonderful wonderland
No dark horse like me can cramp all of your style
Too plain and simple I am for your file
