Synopsis
Weird Al Yankovic performs a deceptively tender acoustic breakup song while surrounded by musicians in a stark studio setting. The singer presents himself as a confused romantic who only gradually realizes that his girlfriend has been trying to get rid of him, often through increasingly violent means. The video's gentle, intimate presentation parodies Extreme's "More Than Words," undercutting the soft ballad atmosphere with visual gags, battered performers, and a climactic guitar-smashing finale.
Factoids & Trivia
- "You Don't Love Me Anymore" is an original song, not a parody. The record label agreed to release it as a single only if the accompanying video parodied an existing music video.
- The clip imitates Extreme's "More Than Words." Many listeners initially assumed that Yankovic's song itself was a parody of that ballad, even though only the video borrows from it.
- The video was filmed at the Charlie Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles.
- It follows "Smells Like Nirvana," with the opening sequence continuing an incident involving drummer Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz. Yankovic later clarified that the sequence belongs at the beginning of this video; a DVD mastering error placed it at the end of "Smells Like Nirvana."
- Robert Goulet appears as the piano player, whose performance becomes increasingly hazardous. Tony De La Rosa, returning from the "Smells Like Nirvana" video, plays the cellist in janitor garb.
- Jim West styled his appearance after Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt. West's Ovation guitar is eventually smashed, but it resisted several blows before finally breaking.
- Bassist Steve Jay chipped a tooth while biting into the large piece of ham used in one gag. His reaction in the finished video was genuine.
- A prop on one of the golf clubs was accidentally fitted with a condom by the set decorator. Yankovic later said that he and the production team did not notice it until it was too late.
