Synopsis

On a New York subway, Darren Hayes notices a woman played by Kirsten Dunst and is immediately drawn to her. Their silent connection grows as they sit opposite one another, while the train moves through the city. When a power outage plunges the carriage into red emergency light, the passengers join hands. Hayes reaches for the woman, and the moment shifts into sunlit scenes of the pair walking together in a park, suggesting that a chance encounter has become a destined romance.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in August 1999 on a New York City subway set that had previously appeared on the sitcom "Seinfeld."
  • Darren Hayes said the concept was developed with the production team as a romantic film loosely inspired by "Sliding Doors."
  • Kirsten Dunst was on Hayes' personal wish list for the female role. He did not realize at first that she had played Claudia in "Interview with the Vampire," the film connected to Savage Garden's Anne Rice-inspired name.
  • Hayes recalled being nervous about holding Dunst's hand and kissing her during the shoot. They also discovered that they shared the same zodiac sign and a favorite lyric from the song.
  • The video received heavy rotation on MTV during the song's breakthrough. "I Knew I Loved You" later won the Billboard Music Award for Best Adult Contemporary Video.
  • The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in early 2000 and remained on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for 124 weeks.
