Synopsis

A dog dozes in a meadow and dreams in the style of a black-and-white silent film, where it rescues a woman from a runaway train. Awakened by music from a nearby concert hall, the dog wanders into Phil Collins' rehearsal space during a band sound check. It explores the stage, feasts on the musicians' food, and briefly takes over Collins' piano and drums. Its chaotic visit ends with a pair of comic accidents involving the band's backing singer and bassist.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The song was written by Phil Collins and guitarist Daryl Stuermer and appeared on Collins' 1989 album "...But Seriously."
  • The song was originally written with the 1989 film "The War of the Roses" in mind. It was ultimately not used in the movie.
  • The clip uses silent-film conventions for the dog's dream, including black-and-white photography, exaggerated peril, and a melodramatic rescue sequence.
  • The concert-hall scenes were built around a band sound check, giving the video a backstage, tour-rehearsal setting rather than a conventional performance setup.
  • The dog gets several opportunities to behave like an uninvited backstage guest, including eating from the band's buffet and climbing around the stage equipment.
  • The comic ending involves Leland Sklar's bass-playing character, although Sklar did not play bass on the studio recording. Nathan East performed the bass part on the track.
  • The single reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • The video was included in the home-video collection "...But Seriously, The Videos," released in 1991.

Lyrics

We had a life, we had a love,
But you don't know what you've got 'til you lose it
Well that was then and this is now
And I want you back
How many times do I have to say I'm sorry

How can something so good go so bad
How can something so right go so wrong
I don't know, I don't have all the answers
But I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry

You can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving less you come with me
