Synopsis

A young boy enters a coliseum and is swept into the violent excitement of an Offspring performance. As the band tears through the song, the crowd erupts into a chaotic mosh pit, with the boy caught in the middle of the movement and noise. Shot almost entirely in stark black and white, the video emphasizes the intensity and disorientation of the scene. When the music ends, the boy is left lying alone on the floor, turning the concert's communal energy into an abrupt and unsettling final image.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed at the Fairgrounds Coliseum in Salt Lake City, Utah, on December 17, 1994.
  • Its black-and-white photography gives the performance a rough, documentary-like quality that suits the song's anxious mood and the physical chaos of the crowd.
  • The boy's entrance and final isolation provide the video with a simple circular structure: he is drawn into the crowd's energy, then left alone after it subsides.
  • "Gotta Get Away" appeared on The Offspring's 2005 DVD release, *The Offspring Complete Music Video Collection*.
  • The song was one of the more mid-tempo tracks on *Smash*, helping balance the album's faster punk songs. Dexter Holland later described it as part of his effort to broaden the record's sound.
