Synopsis

Nine Inch Nails perform within a grim, dreamlike laboratory filled with decaying objects, religious symbols, animal imagery, and fetishistic tableaux. Trent Reznor appears bound, blindfolded, and suspended amid the unsettling surroundings, while a beating heart, a spinning pig's head, insects, and other grotesque images create a sense of ritual and decay. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video builds an atmosphere of sexual obsession, self-loathing, blasphemy, and psychological collapse through a rapid succession of carefully composed images.

Factoids & Trivia

• Filmed in April 1994, the video first aired on May 12, 1994. Several sequences were shot inside the abandoned Linda Vista Community Hospital in Los Angeles.

• The imagery draws heavily from the disturbing photographic work of Joel-Peter Witkin, with additional visual influences associated with surrealist and grotesque art.

• The production used a deliberately aged-looking film stock. The effect was created with contemporary stock that was already slightly out of date, helping the video resemble a damaged artifact from another era.

• Ash Beck handled the levitation effects, film-distressing work, and the unsettling "Scene Missing" cards used in the television edit.

• MTV removed or obscured several images, including the more explicit sexual and violent material. The replacement cards became part of the video's identity and made the censorship visible rather than simply hiding it.

• An unedited version was shown on Playboy TV in 1994. MTV2 later broadcast the uncensored cut during a late-night 2002 countdown of controversial music videos.
