Synopsis

Garbage perform in a stark, tightly framed setting built around Shirley Manson's confrontational presence. The video cuts between full-band shots, extreme close-ups of Manson's face and mouth, and distorted reflections that make the imagery feel unstable and claustrophobic. Shot in black and white, it uses harsh lighting, rapid edits, strobing and shimmering surfaces to mirror the song's themes of emotional manipulation, suspicion and inner turmoil. There is no conventional storyline; the tension comes from the band's performance and the increasingly fractured visual treatment.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was conceived as a deliberately simple follow-up to the elaborate, effects-heavy clip for "Push It." Its black-and-white photography gives the performance a stark, almost portrait-like quality.

• Shiny mylar material was used to create the warped reflections and flickering visual effects seen throughout the clip.

• The close-up compositions were inspired in part by the cover of The Beatles' 1963 album "With the Beatles."

• The original version contained more intense strobing. Some of the footage was modified shortly after the US premiere to reduce the effect.

• The video first received a commercial home-video release in 1999 through the Italian CD-ROM sampler "All About Garbage."

• A remastered version was later included on Garbage's 2007 greatest-hits DVD, "Absolute Garbage," and was also released through digital music services.

• Shirley Manson's black-and-tan polka-dot dress from the video was sold for $31,750 at a February 2025 charity auction supporting Los Angeles wildfire relief.
