Synopsis

Ultravox's "The Thin Wall" presents a surreal nightmare in which Midge Ure moves through an increasingly unstable world. Familiar spaces become threatening as floors appear to shift, walls seem permeable, and ordinary situations take on an uncanny quality. The other members of Ultravox appear less like performers than silent participants in the unsettling scenario. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video uses disjointed images and dream logic to reflect the song's themes of paranoia, isolation, and the fragile barrier between security and danger.

• "The Thin Wall" was released in August 1981 as the lead single from Ultravox's album "Rage in Eden." It reached No. 14 on the UK Singles Chart.

• The band's stated intention was to fill the video with random images in which normal situations gradually became strange. That approach helped distinguish it from a straightforward performance clip.

• Midge Ure later recalled that he and bassist Chris Cross had prepared much of the visual concept themselves. Their ideas included a distorted-looking floor, a car filling with water despite dry surroundings, and arms reaching through a wall.
