Synopsis

Garbage perform inside a stark loft, but the band members are visible only through reflections, video monitors, and the camera lens. As the chorus arrives, their bodies disappear, leaving floating clothes and instruments moving through the room. Shirley Manson continues the performance as an invisible presence, eventually staging a playful striptease before approaching a mirror that still shows her reflection. The surreal finale reveals the joke behind the effect: the unseen Manson uses the bathroom while standing up.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed in a Brooklyn loft on October 22, 2001.

• Garbage's apparent invisibility was created by shooting the musicians in green gauze suits and digitally replacing their bodies with the loft background. The clothing interiors were also reconstructed with computer-generated imagery.

• Shirley Manson dyed her normally red hair platinum blonde the night before filming. The change reportedly worried the production because her red hair was strongly associated with her image.

• An earlier concept imagined an alternative-universe truck stop populated by subtly reptilian characters, with 1960s biker-movie styling, manga influences, a hot-rod race, and a flying saucer. That treatment was abandoned before production.

• The band later expressed dissatisfaction with the finished video. Shirley Manson said the group had been pressured into approving an idea they disliked, while Duke Erikson felt the result distracted from the song.

• The video first appeared commercially on the enhanced CD-ROM edition of the "Cherry Lips" single. A remastered version was later included on Garbage's 2007 greatest-hits DVD, "Absolute Garbage."
