Sheryl Crow's "Soak Up The Sun" video really does capture the mood of the song. It's just as upbeat and energetic as the rhythm and lyrics. There's nothing really special about the editing effects besides unique transitions where a wave of water morphs into another picture. The video was shot on a beach in Hawaii, which was very fitting, and Sheryl looks absolutely gorgeous with her long curly hair, summer clothes and bare feet.
It begins with a calm ocean wave (accompanied by a sound effect), and soon the upbeat rhythm comes in and takes over. We see Sheryl putting on sunscreen (you wouldn't want to get burned out there) or suntan lotion (in which case she does want to get burned out there). A few quick cuts lead to her relaxing on a palm tree while singing, strumming her guitar and tapping her bare foot on the sand to the beat (it's obvious she's enjoying herself). She then appears on some kind of sofa, tapping her bare foot with the rhythm and singing the lyrics about her communist friend and his RV. A clever zoom out occurs here, revealing that she's sitting inside an RV. A few quick shots of her sitting on a log are shown, then it cuts back to her in the RV singing the well-known lines "It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got" while her toes tap to keep time. She jumps out of the RV, and this leads into the chorus. This segment shows expert surfers riding the waves, cutting now and then to shots of Sheryl back at the palm tree, strumming the guitar, singing the chorus, and tapping her bare foot. We finally start seeing new views when she sings from atop a cliff that overlooks a waterfall (how'd she get up there?), and inside an open-roofed car wearing sunglasses. The sky suddenly gets considerably darker, and Sheryl is now sitting on a log by a fire, singing without her guitar but still tapping that bare foot. The last segment finally reaches nightime, where the sky is completely dark, but Sheryl and all her beach friends have come out to party.
The video's obvious message is that things shouldn't be taken too seriously, and that people have to lighten up and stay happy. I'd say it was filmed and edited successfully. As you probably noticed though, there are a lot of shots showing her tapping her bare foot, some of which have nearly no other action at all. Sheryl knows that fans think she has attractive feet, and perhaps this is why so many scenes show them tapping. In my opinion, less of this would have made a better video.
