Anmerkungen: The Poem read by James Garner:

Patrick O'Leary - author at GM's advertising agency

Nobody Knows It But Me
There's a place that I travel
When I want to roam,
And nobody knows it but me

The roads don't go there
And the signs stay home
And nobody knows it but me

It's far far away
And way way afar
It's over the moon and the sea

And wherever you're going
That's wherever you are
And nobody knows it but me

There was another car commercial with a moving poem, but the poem was actually written by the ad man who created the ad. Does anyone know this poem?
Monday 09/20/10

I had to learn this poem in second grade in 1943. He changed only one word. We learned it using the word "roam" in place of the word "Travel."

A wonderful expression of a sentiment held in hearts of many people of experience. Another version:

There is a road in the hearts of all of us, hidden and seldom traveled, which leads to an unknown, secret place.

2002 was my first year in US. Till that time I had seen car commercials in USA with only numbers on the screen, 200/pm for 60 months and then this ad comes up with such exquisite words. I thought it was Robert Frost or somebody, because it sounded so familiar, but it was somebody contemporary. Any ways, great ad; very refreshinh
Wednesday 01/07/04

Great words and meaning!!! I could listen to this 10 times aday for a week and keep it in the favorities folder.
Tuesday 11/04/03

Very few Comercials affect me the way this did. The voice of James Gardner narrating the poem and visuals, simply awesome! Great Job!
Monday 09/29/03

All commercials should have this creativity. As a creative person myself, this poem is a nice and pleasant inspiration to me. Though I am not in the market for this car, let alone any vehicle, this commercial stands out far beyond the rest. Chevy has good taste!
Wednesday 08/06/03

I love the poem and think that he did a good job with it but I want to get a clip of it and I can't find one anywhere. Do any of you know where I can find a downloadable version of it?? Thanks.
Saturday 07/12/03

Reading all these reviews just reminded me, it takes Chevrolet people to appreciate the simple things in life. God Bless.
Friday 07/11/03

Yes, if all media experiences could enrich us--and that is what this outstanding commercial has done--enrich us, our world might be a better place. Kudos to Chevy.
Tuesday 07/08/03

Wow! James Garner's voice is better than Jesus! That poem is the most beautiful poem since the Song of Solomon! And watching Mother Nature getting it good from that Monster Tahoe is the most beautiful visual since the dawn of time!
What a bunch of freaking morons.
Tuesday 07/08/03

The landscape's deep-grooved
with the scars from the Tahoe
And nobody knows it was me.

Has anyone noticed that the Tahoe is tearing the crap out of the natural rock formations in this commercial?
GMC is evil.
Monday 06/30/03

Since the first time I heard this commercial I immediately thought "this sounds like James Garner" but just wasn't sure. Finally through this site I have discoverd, to my utter delight the truth, that it is him!! The poem is so beautiful and I agree with others who say no one but James Garner could recite it so well. It's the only commercial I make the kids shut up so I can hear it!! Way to go James and Chevy!!!!!!!!
Friday 06/27/03

This commercial makes me ashamed to be an American.

The suggestion you can drive a loud, gas guzzling, pollution emitting 4x4 into a mountain wilderness area, at least in the lower 48, is absurd.

Obviously you are not going to find a place that no one else knows if you can drive there in a gargantuan truck, since roads are not natural formations. And if you do find a place that no one knows you most likely left a path of destruction behind you.

GM wants you to think you will be able to find places like this only if you buy their $35,000 vehicle. Wake up! It is ridiculous. Keep it simple, this damn truck will not give you fulfillment!!!

Get out of your air-conditioned shell, and use your legs that God gave you!!!
Monday 06/09/03

I feel weightless, in "Endless Flight." I don't know whether to scream in agony or writhe with pleasure. Just when I felt like I knew my Tahoe... comes this, this, sensual revelation in the form of a television advertisement! I feel a great rumbling in my loins... and nobody knows it but me!!!
Sunday 06/08/03

In my opinion no one could have done the poem better than James Garner. His sexy voice catches the ear. It made stop and think of how much I enjoy just taking off and going no where until u get somewhere.
Monday 06/02/03

Wonderful poem, very touching. Sound vagley familiar from my childhood.
Friday 05/30/03

By the time I was able to get to a computer and pull it up I was not able to get a copy of the entire page of the poem Nobody Know It but Me. Please email me a copy of the poem for my mom. Thank you,

Contary to D. Mahoney who thought the poem is 'simple-minded', I think it is excellent, and like another viewer, I thought it was from some famous poem. I did not know the narrator is James Garner. You couldn't have picked a better one. It's one of the few commercials I watch all the way through without 'muting' it! Peaceful, serene, calming, etc. are all words for this outstanding commercial. Would that there were more like this!
Friday 04/11/03

I absolutely LOVE this commercial! the poem is so good i thought it was a famous one. It seriously makes me want to go buy a chevy! I also think James Garner's voice helps a little.
Wednesday 04/09/03

I LOVE this Ad. The words of the poem read by the talented James Garner is just a touching poem that everyone can relate to. It is a job that is well done.
Monday 04/07/03

Nobody Knows It But Me was so good, I have been asked to read it at a program. I hear there is a sequel out, but I haven't been able to get the words yet.
Wednesday 04/02/03

This is the best commercial on TV! I love the poem and to hear James Garner's melodic voice. Each time it comes on, I have to stop and give it my full attention. It makes you want a Tahoe and to travel across this great country. Keep it running!!!!
Saturday 03/29/03

I hate commercials, but I find myself channel surfing during breaks just to find this one. Finally not the same old boring truck commercial. And James Garner is an excellent match. You should however acknowledge the author somehow.
Monday 03/24/03

My husband and I love the poem, "Nobody knows it but me". James Garner makes it all the more special. We both have a special place we've been and feel just that way about it. Thanks so much!
Saturday 03/22/03

Probably the only thing more humorous than the ham-handed Chevy Tahoe 'ad-poetry' is the lavish praise heaped upon that rather simplistic, trite poem. The poem isn't terrible, just simple-minded and cliched, and quite hardly anything close to 'brilliant,' 'amazing,' or a dozen other such overplayed adjectives. Those who love this poem and ad only prove their own simpleness.
Wednesday 03/19/03

The Chevy commercials are the only car commercials that I watch or listen to. And not because I own two used Chevys. The commercials appeal to women because there is not alot of macho-rev-and-run- over-rocks-in-black-and-white-in-the- rain. The poem has a broader appeal to more than just the stud truck enthusiasts. How many of us are SUV moms?
Wednesday 03/19/03

From the first time that I saw the "Nobody" commercial, I was just in awe of it. Patrick O'Leary's poem and James Garner's voice, as well as the scenery in the commercial just amazed me. If all tv ads were like this one, then no one would ever be able to go to the bathroom---they'd be afraid of missing another beautiful ad. Thank you for running it, and please keep doing so.
Wednesday 03/12/03

I wish I had a new word to discribe this commercial. Brilliant, the best! My mom (who hates commercials) told me that it reminded her of a little place she went when she was a little girl that was all her own and no one knew about. This poem brings her such peace, which she has very little of in her life. I'm going to find the poem and engrave it on glass and frame it for her to have any time she wants to go to her special place. I wish I could afford a Tahoe. I'd sure buy one! Best commercial since using 'Like a Rock'. Keep that advertising team together!!!!
Wednesday 03/12/03

I have owned several Chevrolets and really liked them. We lived next to a highway, in Texas, as children and counted models of cars going by. Chevrolets were #1. I, too, have been searching for the words of this poem, and thought I remembered it from long ago. I've had a crush on James Garner since "Maverick", and love that he was your choice. The poem is great, and his wonderful voice always gives me tingles.
Monday 03/03/03

When my husband and I first saw the commercial, he commented about the "tahoe" and then the poem. He said he wished he had that poem, because of the free feeling you have when your "way far away" especially in the roads in Idaho. As a mother of a daughter pursing a career in advertising...Hats off to you and your Ad team for making such a great commercial, with a great poem by O'Leary, and the soothing voice of James Garner. May we see many more memorable commercials from Chevy!
Sunday 03/02/03

Stunning! Stopped in our tracks and ran to the TV everytime we heard the Voice and the Poem. Finally went on line hoping to find the words. Printed -- suitable for framing. Deserves the CLIO Award for Best Commercial of all time!
Saturday 03/01/03

James Garner's voice is sooo soothing. He has magnetic appeal.
Friday 02/28/03

like Cathy R, I find it hauntingly familiar.Recognized James
Garner right away but can't place the reason for the familiar feeling from long ago.And it isn't just because I have been a chevy buyer for 50 years.
Monday 02/24/03

My favorite commercial of all time. It is the most beautiful and serene poem I have ever heard. James Garner narrating is what makes it perfect. Let's see more of this kind of commercials. (This is what the country needs after being driven crazy by the "Can you hear me now" one.
Monday 02/24/03

I love this poem,Glad I was able to find it on the internet. The reading of it is also so beautiful. Thanks
Saturday 02/22/03

James Garner's delivery is awesome....
It is a terrific ad, but more than that, it left such an impression that if buying a truck I would buy or at least look at a Tahoe!!
Thursday 02/13/03

this little poem really works...James Garner is completely awsome, and delivers a television experience of what i would call transcendental meditation. i keep asking: how did they do that? but it is a total home run...thank you!
Thursday 02/13/03

What genius!!! The combination of James
Garner, a true American Treasure and a poem that's stops one dead in their tracks --- and takes you A-w-a-y. Please allow us to obtain a copy of this either in print or on film --- what a brilliant commercial -- sorry I could never afford a Tahoe but I tell everyone about it!!!!
Thursday 02/13/03

I love the poem read by James Garner. I don't usually pay that much attention to the ads, but this one caught my attention. Finally I have the words of the poem. I just couldn't write fast enough while the commercial was on. Thanks for such a great commercial.
Thursday 02/13/03

The visual is excellent. The poem and James Garner's recitstion above excellent. But, why not give credit to the person who penned it? At the bottom it says GM Motors 2002. I doubt that all of GM sat down together and wrote it. Let's hear it for the author!!
Wednesday 02/12/03

Patty
Surprised to see so many people wanting to know where the poem came from. I was so sure it was A.A. Milne or even borrowed from the great Dr. himself. I love the poem, it makes me feel good and want to drive a Cbevy at the same time...Perfection in advertising..
Friday 02/07/03

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL AND BUT WRITTEN WITH SUCH CLARITY. THIS DESERVES MORE RECOGNITION THAN A COMMERCIAL. HOW FORTUNATE CHEVY IS TO "OWN" THIS.
Thursday 02/06/03

Your Chevy Tahoe commercial is mesmerizing and appealing. As James Garner recites Patrick O'Leary's unique poem, his captivating voice puts me right inside the Chevrolet Tahoe going to where "The roads don't go...." The Tahoe is my favorite vehical. When I'm driving on road, I turn my head to admire them as they pass me...especially the red ones. Kudos to Patrick O'Leary!!
Wednesday 02/05/03

One of the best commercials I have seen. It caught my eye with the beautiful background and the poem was just outstanding. Makes me want to take off and go to the place that "nobody knows it but me." James Garner has a great voice and delivery. I would love to have a tape of the poem and others by O'Leary. Thanks for something worth watching.
Monday 02/03/03

A lovely poem with a beautiful commercial. James Garner has a great voice. Now...if only I were old enough to drive...
Sunday 02/02/03

The poem is a winner and a definite class act with James Garner as the "voice". Thought I'd look it up on line, just to see if I could find it. What a nice surprise to see so many others agree with me about the poem and the voice! I think the Tahoe is a great vehicle anyway! Thanks to those responsible for the commercial.
Sunday 02/02/03

I truly enjoy your comercial. The poem and James Garner's awesome voice is deeply moving. Kudos to Patrick O'Leary. He deserves a raise.
Sunday 02/02/03

I don't know if I would gush over the commercial as others have done, but I did take the time to look it up online, didn't I? Didn't dawn on me that the voice was that of James Garner, but now I get it. GM has sure scored a hit with this one. Thank you,GM.
Saturday 02/01/03

I love the "Chevy Tahoe" commercial with the poem. The scenery is beautiful and so isn't the poem. Hats off to Chevy.
Saturday 01/25/03

probably the most moving and masterfully commercial i've ever seen.

all i can say is "WOW" and my hat's off to chevy's advertising department and to James Garner's incredible voice.
Wednesday 01/22/03

This is by far the best commercial on TV. Photography is breath-taking, narration is wonderful and not to lose sight of what they are selling...The Tahoe isn't bad either.
Sunday 01/19/03

I love the Chevy Tahoe poem and would love to have the words or a video of the commercial. Chevy is missing a golden opportunity if it doesn't release this somehow. James Garner reading of the poem is wonderful. It is such a pleasure to just hear his voice and the poem makes one feel so serene. I wish I had a tahoe truck.
Wednesday 01/15/03

I seldom watch or pay any attention to commercials on cars or trucks. However, your Chevy Tahoe commercial with James Garner reading of a poeom is outstanding and makes me watch and listen. And I believe that it is all because of not only the poem itself but because of the delivery of the poem by James Garner whose voice is a natural treasure. You could not have made a better choice when you approached him for the commercial. And although I don't own a Chevy Tahoe (I wish we could!) like many other viewers, everytime I hear and watch this commercial, I feel myself driving right there to that far away place that nobody knows but me. There should be more commercials like that. This one is pure gold and I hope that Patrick O'Leary and James Garner will enrich us again with similar commercials.
Monday 01/13/03

What really caught my attention was the poem (which goes perfectly with the commercial). I had the commercial taped so that I could get the words of the poem down. I have it framed now. I tell everyone about the poem and I refer to it as "You know, the 'Chevy Tahoe' poem", so in essence, I end up advertising Chevy Tahoe with the poem which of course is exactly what you guys wanted in the first place. Just can't help mentioning one without the other. Funny how it they both stick in your mind. Keep up the GOOD WORK!
Monday 01/13/03

Absolutely love the poem. Makes me want to go "there"
Monday 01/13/03

An outstanding commercial. Invokes a feeling a serenity and peacefulness. I'm ready to buy a Tahoe and take off... James Garner's voice is immediately recognizable and just fits. But the poem sounds so familiar like something I read as a child. What is it?
Sunday 01/12/03

I too don't drive a truck but I find this ad to be so calming and peaceful. What a wonderful job Mr. O'Leary did. What agency does he work for and has he done others that are of similar quality?
Makes watching commercials enjoyable. Everyone in our home has to silence themselves when this commercial comes on.
Sunday 01/12/03

I have never written a review, I don't drive a truck, and I usually change stations during commercials, but this commercial is wonderful. Before I ever saw the entire commercial, I was telling family and friends about the wonderful serene poem I had heard. When I mentioned it to my son-in-law (who does drive a truck), he knew exactly which commercial I was talking about and has test-driven the Tahoe. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all commercials could be as enticing as this one!
Sunday 01/12/03

The visuals are good, but the poem is really outstanding. It has such a mental transporation feel without any physical tricks in the visuals. I'd love to hear other Patrick O'Leary have any other works.
Thursday 01/09/03

Thanks for a great visual ride and wonderful poetry in a memorable commercial. It is wonderful when a product I use has a commercial that makes me proud of the company. And makes me feel a little smug for having chosen it!
Tuesday 01/07/03

Kudos for your recent "Nobody knows it but me" commercial. It's refreshing to see a truck commercial without a country western singer crooning a tune about his Ford truck.
Monday 01/06/03

Bravo for your Chevy Tahoe commercial with poetry recited by James Garner. It's refreshing to hear a truck commercial with someone other than a country western singer crooning over his Ford truck.
Monday 01/06/03

Fabulous Chevy Tahoe commercial. The poem 'Nobody Knows It But Me" is so refreshing. James Garner's voice makes it perfect.
Tuesday 12/31/02

I just love the poem that is recited and of course by a wonderful voice such as James Garner. My Mom just loves it and I'm going to give her a copy of it.
Chevy usually has the best commercials.
Thursday 12/26/02

I travel to the Southwest twice a year, in a truck, and find that one special place and "Nobody Knows It But Me"....Thank You for the poem. We have been a Chevy family for 30 years! We have a Silverado and a Tahoe.
Tuesday 12/17/02

I love the poem recited in the Chevy Tahoe commercial. I have no interest in buying a Chevy Tahoe (I'm not really a truck person), but I love the poem. It brings images of peace, tranquility, and solitude to mind. I know poetry means different things to different people, but this poem says to me that it's nice to have a "little place" that you can retreat to (whether an actual place or just in your mind) ... and nobody knows it but me. I love it.
Friday 11/22/02

Just wonderful. I'm going to get a Tahoe and go "there" sooner than I planned.
Monday 11/11/02

Great commercial, great poem. Good work!
The voice of James Garner is extraordinary!
