Clipland is a music video database where users can enter cast & crew, actors, directors, DPs and other interesting tidbits related to music videos. When the IMDb launched in 1990, the Internet was still void of proper information about video content. But this changed. Since it's inception, the movie database has gathered quite probably every info of relevance about any movie out there. Still, years later, it's still going strong but what's missing is exhaustive data about short form media, which is how we here at Clipland refer to music video and similar content. That changed in 1998 when musicvideo database Clipland was launched.

Music videos

Music videos, or promos as they they say in Britain, are an art form where music and imagery are combined in unique ways. Invented more or less around 1930, the real high for the music video began in the late 50s and reached a peak during the 1980s and 1990s with music video television station MTV as the primary outlet reaching a global audience. After that golden age a slow decline began, with the advent of the web, an increasingly scattered media landscape and the disruption of traditional major label business models. One big and several smaller dot com bubbles later, music sales started to increase again and the music video, rising from a niche where it survived the turn of the century, shaked off the dust. Today, music videos are back on the map of a mainstream media audience. Distributed across many channels and platforms, mostly as video on demand, the moving image for sound has found its audience again. And here, in our database, we gather information about this medium.
