What are video formats?
Video files on computers are a package of audio and video data stored together into one file. The "outer packaging" is called a container or the container format.

While the number of codecs used to encode the audio and video data itself is quite large, there are very few popular container formats out there. Clipland PRO | Portfolio© currently supports 6 container formats (or file formats):
  • AVI,
  • ASF,
  • Quicktime,
  • MPEG,
  • RealMedia,

This is achived by supporting 3 video players:
  • Microsoft™ MediaPlayer,
  • Apple™ Quicktime Player and
  • Real™ RealOne

Which specific encoding formats your computer supports is dependent on the version of the player(s) you have installed on your computer and the installed codecs on your system. Most players feature an automatic codec installer - thus you shouldn't have to care about this.

Showreels compiled in Clipland PRO | Portfolio© have to consist solely of files of one container format. To be more precise of file types handled by the same player application. Embedding video into webpages is a fragile process and the different container formats aren't compatible to each other. While we would like to support multi-format reels in our application this would involve switching players during play and this isn't possible at this time using current browser technology. So please decide for a container format and stick with it during showreel compilation.
