Synopsis
A satellite drifts through space before the video drops into San Francisco, where Stephan Jenkins walks along Valencia Street and the band drives through the city with a dog. The clip mixes street scenes, scooter riders, motorcycles, cafes, strangers, flirtations, arguments, and performances in a dark room dominated by a spinning clock. The restless urban montage culminates with young people dancing around the band and a woman watching the televised Moon landing, linking its American flag to the jacket seen at the beginning.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed in San Francisco, with much of the action associated with the South of Market, Mission, and Dogpatch areas.
- Third Eye Blind members Stephan Jenkins and Kevin Cadogan helped pay the production costs themselves. Jenkins described the band's approach as important to its do-it-yourself attitude.
- Many of the people seen in the street scenes were recruited locally rather than brought in as a conventional cast. The shoot was completed over two days.
- The production was inspired in part by the band's admiration for the video for Bush's "Swallowed."
- The closing Moon landing image was designed to evoke MTV's moonman logo, the MTV generation, and the broader idea of discovery and exploration.
- The version used for video and radio removed most of the song's bridge. The phrase "crystal meth" was also obscured through backmasking, helping the bright, upbeat clip pass more easily through mainstream music television.
