Synopsis

Jimi Jamison encounters a captivating blonde woman in a Chicago record store and becomes increasingly drawn into a fantasy of romantic possibility. As Survivor perform amid dramatic stage lighting, the pair appear to share an intimate adventure that moves through the city's elevated train system. The dreamlike sequence builds toward a hurried pursuit through the station, only to reveal that Jamison has imagined much of the encounter. When reality returns, he races after the woman, but the departing train leaves their possible romance unresolved.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Released in September 1984, the song was the first hit single from *Vital Signs*, Survivor's first album with Jimi Jamison as lead vocalist.
  • The video was filmed in Chicago, reflecting Survivor's hometown connection. Several scenes use the Chicago Transit Authority's elevated system, including a prominent appearance by CTA car 2690.
  • The train sequence draws partly on the visual language of *Risky Business*, a notable Chicago-set film released the previous year.
  • Lee Ann Marie plays Jamison's romantic interest. She later became recognizable to movie fans for appearing on a float in *Ferris Bueller's Day Off*.
  • The video's fantasy structure matches the song's theme of escalating desire: the imagined concert and romantic encounter give visual form to the narrator's urge to stop holding back.
  • The clip received substantial MTV exposure during the network's early-1980s expansion, helping introduce Jamison as Survivor's new frontman and contributing to the song's crossover success.
  • "I Can't Hold Back" reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped Billboard's Top Rock Tracks chart for three weeks.
